Liquid surfaces have a tensile strength that prefers to hold straight surfaces. the bubble is an internal gas pressure exerting a counter force on the membrane of the liquid. It cant be square or any other sharp edged form, or the surface tension will be overcome by the gas pressure that surrounds it.
