4K TV

For under $500 you're not going to get much, any 4k tv under 50-60" is pointless, so you're going to have to spend 800-1000.

Just get a nice 50 inch 1080p tv for $500.

honestly its too early to hop on the 4K TV wagon. Very very little content you watch on it would be 4K, and most of whats sold as 4K was edited in 3.somethingK and exported in closer to 2K, the last Star Wars movie is the only recent example I can think of that was completely shot, edited, and exported fully in 4K. I'd recommend picking up a huge 1080p display for cheaper than a smaller 4K one and wait for the content to grow

To add to what everyone else has said, 4k and HDR are amazing, however the only content you will ever use it over the next 3 years is for extremely overpriced 4k Blu Rays, and maybe some bigger titles for the ps4/xbox scorpio. Its still considered in the early adopter phase.

If you live in an area with google fiber or have 1gig internet it could be worth it since you have the ability to stream 4k HDR from netflix, but the service is buggy and probably wont work most of the time. give it 3-5 years then get a bomb ass 4k tv when we hopefully have better internet in the US and can stream the content.

As said before content is limited for 4k. I just bought a 1080p to replace my 720p so I'm still amazed by the clarity of 1080

Although there isn't a whole lot of content out for 4K the picture in general does look better and within the next two years I feel there definitley will be a lot more content out and I'd rather buy one now than buy a 1080p one just to upgrade to 4K next year. Also eheath you can get a 55" 4K tv for $500 there coming down in price hence why I'm considering it

Can you even tell the difference in resolution from 4K to 1080p on such a small display? When I think 4K content, I think movie theaters. Am I out to lunch on this or is it because there's almost nothing that's actually 4K out there?

Yes in general the picture is sharper since it has more detail and all though there isn't a whole lot of content out in 4k right now it is being developed especially for a lot of games and I would say by next year most games for next gen consoles will be 4k

you can't make something out of nothing, watching 1080p content on a 4k TV is still 1080p content, and like myself and many others stated in this thread, there is almost no true 4k content out right now. Just because a blu-ray is labeled "4k UHD" doesn't mean the content is unfortunately. Most are mastered in 2 or 3k then upscaled back to 4k for the blu-ray.

as for gaming, the XBone/PS4 can barely handle true 1080/60p, and a surprising amount are actually 900p thats upscaled so it can maintain 60fps. The 4k titles you are thinking of probably have 4k rendered menus/HUDs so the text looks sharp, and the gameplay is just upscaled and not actually rendered in true 4k. If high end gaming computers struggle with 4k/60p, theres no way these consoles are pumping that out

to sum it up, 4k got rushed to the market and is not truly ready for primetime for both movies and console gaming, the content just isn't there

Stick with the 1080p.
Joining everyone in saying 4K tvs are too ahead of everything else.
The only thing 4K is good for these days is blowing up part of a picture in 1080p.

On top of the massive amount of bandwidth and data it takes to stream/download anything in 4K, mostly all broadcast is going to ever be 1080p. Forever and ever, until all the bandwidth licenses expire and somehow the broadcast industry is able to scoop up extra.
I don't see that happening anytime soon though.
