U.S. plans program cuts, Cheney says

WASHINGTON - The U.S. administration is planning cuts to 150 programs in the budget it will send to Congress for consideration this week, Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday.

Farm subsidies, the Amtrak railway service, native schools, environmental protection and Medicaid – the health service for the poor and disabled – will all face cuts.

The administration wants to reduce spending on programs that are less effective or deemed unnecessary, and try to find the best way to make savings, Cheney said.

He called the proposed budget 'fair, reasonable, responsible.'

Well I don't farm, I rode Amtrak once when I was little and they lost my bag that had my favorite stuffed animal in it, the environment isn't gonna be that bad, I don't use medicaid.

medicade? cmon you're old, you lived a full life, it's time to move on. Medcare and medicade are proably Americas single biggest expendatures. Its costing taxpayers trillions a year to keep old people alive for an extra 6 months of intensive hospital care. We need to draw the line somewhere honestly, yeah we could pump millions upon millions of dollars in hospital care to keep and 80 year old alive untill 81.

dude I took an amtrack from cumblerland maryland to hartford CT. It took about 16 hours and cost 300 bucks. I can make that drive in a car in about 7 hours for about the same in gas or I could fly in about 1.5 hours for the same amount of money.

hold on before you guys start planning your march on the white house.

the headline says that there will be cuts FOR those programms. not that theyre doing away with them. the cuts could be somthing like eliminating needless buerocracies where the only people getting screwed are federal employees who dont do anything anyhow. (as a state employee, i have some idea how government employees act)

or maybe youre all right, and were secretly preparing smaller reservations in the middle of nevada to send all the Indians to after we take away their schools. (its okay though, since they have all that casino money to live off of)

point being, that the article doesnt deliniate what these cuts are. so simmer.

fuck dude, amtrack is a good thing, if it got more money it would be anyways. why do you think that they have those trains in japan and europe (places that are very dense and becuase of this have enviromental problems) if they had enough money to get a decent program going...like if we had a train going alond side I-25, fuck me that would be awsome and save alot of people alot of gas and money.

Let's think here... aside from the ninjas, what's the difference between Japan and America? I wonder if it's easier to maintain an efficient rail system in a tiny country as opposed to a massive one... hard to say, really.

Native SChools-OK, go to normal school and leanr, cause if Indian reservations are the poorest areas in the country, what does that say for schooling?

Amtrak-Let it die, we live in a capitalist society

Medicaid- I believe we should go for socialized healthcare, less lawsuits etc. So I do disagree with this.

America will be fine in the long run though. Some people believed when Jefferson beat Adams it would be the end of the world. and Other presidents screwed shit up so we'll move on and be fine

The Europe thing is a good point, admittedly... but then again, that's a bunch of small countries each maintaining their own rail system. It would be quite a challenge for the US to pull it off.

Dont worrie Canada is good and America is evil and we all know evil looks like its winning for a bit but in the long run good takes over ALWAYS .. plus in business class we study about how China in 20 years or sooner will economicaly power the world over coming the US and all its mighty power making China the new world leader.Not that the US is 'the ' world leader but we will let them think that for awhile longer.
