And seriously, why is America still stuck on racial issues? Everyone knows that after Obama got elected racism died. It's like crying about the white devil is the only thing bonding blacks together now that racism is a thing of the past.

Regarding this situation, Colgate was just adhering to their policies. No reason for anyone to come unglued.

You know what?

It wasn't an unfortunate misunderstanding. However, in this day and age, it's totally reasonable to be concerned about someone looking to do as much harm as possible in a school/public setting. Our culture is inundated with stories of gun violence occurring in schools and in public in general. It's perfectly understandable to see how this could have happened.

It's a damn shame that we have become so accustomed to these things happening that people are now on edge and hyper vigilant. It sucks. But, I'd rather someone report something they thought to be a threat rather than dismiss it, potentially leading to the loss of life or greater loss of life.

Thankfully no one was hurt and this didn't turn into a tragic accident where police ended up killing an unarmed civilian.

I barely want to even address the racial component here. In the context of random or mass violence in the workplace, schools, etc. whites are much more likely to be to blame (just stats, very possibly due to the fact that there's just more white people here in general) so I don't buy the fact that this was some expression of racism or prejudice that led to the call. I feel pretty confident that has the same reporting party seen a white, Asian, Hispanic, whomever else wielding what looked to them to be a weapon, they would've done the exact same thing.

Pretty lame that this is likely to become some big race bait issue. Shit is getting old. Not everything boils down to racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual orientation identities. The media and twitter would have you believe otherwise but I have a quaint little notion that people should be appraised on their relative merits, words, and behaviors and not on their belonging to one particular group or another.

If I was damn sure I saw someone in a university with a gun, I'd call the police.....regardless of color etc.

Hopefully I would not however call in the swat team for some poor shlub making some shitty last minute poster for a group project due in two hours that he's put off for 2 weeks though...

I was on a class trip a few weeks ago in NYC and we were in Penn Station on our way home. Apparently some black homeless guy was arguing with someone and the police had to use a taser on him, someone ended up thinking the taser was a gun and they yelled shooter. The entire station ran for their life and the place got trashed when nothing bad even happened. One of the girls in my class got trampled on an escalator for no reason at all. It's unfortunate that we as a society are so quick to assume that something that bad is happening, but it's even more sad that we have a reason to be alert for possible shootings, etc.

It was a misunderstanding because there's a lot of school shootings in America... I don't see how bringing race into this helps anything. All that's ever been proven to do is divide people more. It's just sad how much some people focus on race, especially the media.

I'm not denying their are still racial issues in the US. But by drawing attention to race in these cases, you are essentially making the situation worse by creating a divide between the two sides. It's like that crazy bitch in high school who causes drama by manipulating facts.
