Beginning to look at colleges, need some input

looking for some input on different colleges to go to. Have a little checklist that would steer me in the right direction but I want to hear from you guys (since a good number of you are passed this stage in your life) what schools would be worth looking at.

1. Want something close to good big mountain skiing. (Don't do much park but cliffs are my thing)

2. Good party scene / Greek Life

3. Alright Business programs since I'm going to college more for skiing than academics (Entrepreneurship / Marketing)

4. Location that isn't desolate, or boring. Little bit of population and fun never hurt anyone haha.

really anything you guys have would help. I've looked at Colorado State, Boulder, Montana State, University of Montana, University of Oregon, OSU and OSU Cascades, as well as a few others that haven't really inerested me. Thanks for any helpful suggestions or input!

If you come to montana do not waste ur time or money at university of montana. The school is fucking terrible. Definitely go to Bozeman and save ur self a headache . I have been to both and currently live in Missoula but don't waste ur time going to u of m. Definitely go montana state in bozo.

Hourish away from school? I normally commute 30 mins to get to my home mountain so anything under an hour and a half would be awesome

Don't go to college if you don't know what you want to get out of it on the academic side, it will be a huge waste of time and money. If you just want to ski and party then go get a job in a ski town, much better option. Don't sink a ton of money into a mediocre college because its close to a ski resort and "i have a solid gpa so why they fuck not." Take your time on the college thing if you aren't sure that you have any passions beyond skiing and chugging beer yet.

Thanks a lot man, some solid advice right there. Not really sure what I got ahead of me right now but I hope to have an idea of what's going on soon.

Can definitely agree here. WSU is a rad school, its,not too hard to get into, has a rad community of "Coug's" that like to party. Also the business school is very good. 2 of my roommates are in it right now. As for skiing you have to drive at least 2 hours to really get anywhere... Brundage in Idaho is my favorite but at 3 hours away I prefer to stay at a cheap place and ski the whole weekend. Schwietzer I hear is pretty sick and a little closer. There's also Bluewood, mission ridge and 49 north still on the Washington side about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours away. I am the VP of the WSU ski team, which is racing... I'm not huge into racing but its a great group of people who love to ski, and gets me up to the mountain consistently. (You also only have to race like 1/4 of the time). being on the team allows me to travel to places like MT bachelor in oregon and red lodge Montana etc... also alot of mountains give crazy discounts to the team on lift tickets, I'm talking like 70% off.

I'm going to go to WSU, that's sick about the ski team. Is it expensive to be on the team? And do many of the guys ski park as well?

I mean its semi expensive, changes from year to year like 300 - 400 dollars, but it includes a weeklong trip, 4 or 5 weekends of traveling.

Most members like to go in the park for fun but nothing serious, mostly into back country trees and powder

Montana state university! It is 15 mins away from Bridger bowl which is one of the top 10 most challenging resorts in the us according to tgr. If you like cliffs you will be in heaven there. They just got a new business school and a pretty damn good party scene. Also big sky one of the biggest resorts in the us, with a banger park, is 45 mins away. Give it a peep bozeman is the coolest place ever

Sometime ago, I asked a question very similar to this to my dad. He said this : "why would you go to college if you want to just ski and party? If you want to just ski and party, become a ski bum, you'll save tons of money."

If you want to go to college you shouldn't be there just to party and ski, because you'll waste a ton money and possibly not even finish.

If skiing is your main priority then go to your local Mexican restaurant and work rest of April-May/Juneish.
While your there save as much money and learn as much Spanish as possible. Then buy a round ticket to Argentina or Chile. Stay May/June-October.

Figure out the rest of your life later. School is overrated if you want to ski all the time.

Just about to finish my freshmen year up here at the University of Nevada, Reno. The business program is killer, the greek life is everywhere and is pretty good (I'm not involved, but it's clear that its thriving) and I've gotten to ski about 3-4 days a week due to being close to Tahoe resorts (I can get to squaw in usually around 45 minutes or less depending on traffic) but the thing with the skiing is here is that you have so many options here. If you want really close skiing and decent terrain you have mount rose which is around 15-20 minutes away and most North Lake resorts which are 45 minutes to an hour away. In general, UNR has been pretty awesome so far, and as a business student I definitely recommend it.

Finishing up my 3rd year at CSU. Good academics and Fort Collins is cool, but the distance to skiing kinda sucks. 2.5 hours minimum to Summit County stuff, 1.5 hours to Rocky Mountain National Park or Cameron Pass. You can definitely make it work, but it's not the best school for skiing.

If you only care about skiing go to U of Utah, 30 mins from 7 resorts with all the skiing you could ever want. U of U is a good school, solid programs, plenty of partying, absolutely no Greek scene if that's what you really want. Colleges with close proximity to skiing don't tend to have solid greek life, mostly because people who ski aren't douche bags. Don't let the word "Utah" make you think you won't have a good time, you're going to college, you will have a good time.

You are very young, you have so much more to learn in life, saying that you aren't worried about your academics based on your first 18 years of life is very naive. I've been out of college for 6 years and I'm still learning new things every day, you're never done learning.

Thanks for the suggestions man, going to have to look into U of Utah. As for the GPA suff, I get it. I go to a weird ass private school where you are still graded on normal tests, quizzes, and hw but there's alot more hands on stuff there + experiential/outdoor learning. Im not saying im a special little flower but I feel like learning by doing rather than sitting in a classroom for the next five years of my life would be beneficial. Sadly, alot of jobs don't see that and thus I can't get a nice paying job without a college degree. (you can but chances are slim)
In all, im not saying that I care more about getting wasted and shredding more than learning, I just find the education system rather dull in the way that they fill your brain with knowledge that you may or may not use when you're finally on your own in the world. And if I'm going to spend the next five years learning in hs and a college, might as well have some fun with it and find a place that has nice academics and awesome skiing.

What the hell is the point in going to college if it's not for academics? Go spend ridiculous amounts of money somewhere else. You're better off just not going to college and moving to a ski town to work and ski if that's what you truly want.

I mean I get wanting access to quality skiing and still going to college but if you get there and put academics second then you're better off waiting a year or two to go to college. Go bum around a ski town and live it up. Then take a look at where you are and if you want that or to actually go to college and study. College isn't for everyone. You can find work and fulfillment without a degree. You can find parties and skiing without a college.

But hey what do I know. I went to college based on academics. I moved to Florida for a job. I have no regrets. Would I have been just as happy putting off college and skiing. Probably. Would I have been just as happy going to college and not giving a shit about my studies. Probably not.

The reason I put academics second was because pretty much every college out there follows the same business program (I know that some differ) and you can get nearly the same education everywhere you go, I just wanted to find a college offering a business program near a good ski resort which is why I said "alright business programs" . I get it, my word choice was poor. Dont hate on a guy haha. If you look at the post above you, you should get a better idea of where I'm coming from than what i said in the OP.

Sorry that wasn't intended to come across as angry or hateful. So what I am now understanding is you're going to take your studies seriously but want good skiing with it? And by academics you more were referring to the quality of the school program? Makes sense if many of the programs are the same then look for whichever school is closest to some good mountains. I can't really help you there since I went to school in the east. But I'm sure anything within 1.5 hours of any reasonable mountain will be good. I'd say unless you plan to skip classes or schedule all night classes I'd expect to only be skiing on weekends or maybe a Friday if you can schedule everything earlier in the week. College is mad fun though. I wish I was still there. I just dislike watching people spend 4+ years without putting much effort in. Seems like a waste of a good education.

We rage at MSU and the skiing is legit as it gets. Definitely distracting from academics though....definitely a different social scene/ college experience than somewhere bigger/ more Greek Life oriented.

On the real though, if you just want to ski don't go to school first. I wish I had taken a year or two to bum around and shred before I started school. If you focused just on skiing your gunna get shit grades and waist money....just my 0.02 from trying to balance skiing and school, definitely not easy if you also want to do well. Maybe a business major is easier and more doable in that regard tho..who knows

Jah. UNR kicks ass. Come join us at squaw/alpine and throw down with the Freeride team. Some of the Top terrain in the nation, and its open till summer break any decent snow year. Ive been skiing 4-5 days a week and we have a super solid group of guys.

But dont join Greek life that shit is wack and you will never have time to ski.

I'm going to Gonzaga next year it's relatively close to wsu since it's in the middle of Spokane, there's a sick community of people there and it's close to a smaller ski mountain and about an hour/hour and a half from schwietzer which is sooooooo sick. Plus they give fat scholarships it's dope at least check it out!

Come to OSU Cascades, next year there will be much more 4 year degrees right out of bend, the dorms are 20 minutes to bachelor and you can walk out your door and go on a MTB ride, also the town itself is awesome with tons of great people and opportunities. There's a rad surf spot in artificial wave in the river. Tons of breweries, 2 hrs to Hood, 1.5 to Corvallis crazy party town and the site of the main campus of OSU to go to football games and party on weekends during the fall. Tuition is dirt cheap, the campus is nice asf, the ratio of students to faculty is incredibly small.

Haven't read the whole thread so sorry if someone's said this, and I'm also not here to tell you where to go to school but I do have some advice that was given to me by older relatives which I ignored and have since a regretted. I'm a senior in college by the way.

Don't be afraid to go somewhere far away. Not like across the country cause that makes getting home so hard, but i solid 6+ hour drive isnt that bad. I spent my freshman year about 6 hours from home, didn't like the school and transferred closer to home (like an hour). Huge mistake. I was scared to transfer to another school I didn't like and still being far away so I made a safe choice, near my home and friends. I shouldve transferred to another one of the awesome schools in the Maryland area (where my first college was). I know you're 17 or 18 and if you're like me and my friends you might feel a little scared or uneasy about moving far away but it's awesome. By the time we were finishing up sophomore year we all wished we had done what a few of our friends had done and gone somewhere sick. You grow a lot in your first and second years of school and get a lot more comfortable living on your own.

To be fair, you may live in a town or area with a sick college so then my advice doesn't mean shit. But if you live somewhere surrounded by mediocre colleges like me, don't be afraid to make the jump somewhere cool. Sorry for the possibly incoherent rambling, im in class half trying to pay attention, half feeling shitty cause I'm getting sick. Best of luck with whatever school you choose. Fuck you dude. I'm finishing school and i'm terrified. You lucky bastard.

Also, as for what colleges you go to, I got to visit Boulder over the summer and It would be unreal. Not sure how far it is from any mountains, but that school was unreal.

I'm about done with my first year at CU Boulder, have nothing but great things to say about it. Tuition is definitely super expensive out of state, so it's kind of up to you in that department, and what you think you'll be able to handle. I'm getting some help from parents on the first 2 years so being an engineer and all I'm pretty comfortable about being able to handle the half that I'll be taking loans out for. Academically it's pretty average, unless you're in business or engineering, very reputable programs that will set you up really well. Skiing wise the drive gets made out to be a lot worse than it is in my opinion, had maybe 2 times this season where traffic was really bad, but typically you'll get to key in an hour and half-45, breck closer to 2 hours. If you want to ski everyday, it's not nearly the best option, but not having a51 30 minutes away keeps you in check with your grades and makes it easier to keep everything balanced. I skied ~65 days this season, was always able to party if I wanted, met tons of sick people, overall thought it was the best fit school for me and still believe that. Yeah think about the skiing, but when it comes down to it theres a lot more that matters in picking a school you wanna spend the next 4 years at. Honestly Gonzaga is pretty close to Schweitzer, has a decent business program, and has a pretty bomb sports scene so that kinda my plan....

to the people saying if you just want to ski, don't go to college, thats fine for op when hes bumming around in his 20's but if he ever really wants to work his way up through into management in any industry, ski industry included, he's gonna need a college degree of some kind to compete with the other former ski bums who skied a bit less and went to school.

don't waste your money going to an expensive school either though, especially when you can get the same thing for a bit cheaper somewhere else.

its not that hard to still ski 5-6 days a week and a get a degree, especially if your near somewhere with night skiing.

The high school I went to had an average SAT score that was about the same as UCLA (a public Ivy). There are some (usually private, like in my case) schools where education is far from glorified babysitting. You might want to ask him where he went to school before you make that assumption. Having said that, the fact that he is going to school primarily for skiing does not exactly make it likely he is going to Andover.

In my years in boarding school people who had graduated and were in college would report back all the time. They all said college was easier, and that of course includes people who went to Yale/Harvard/Pomona/Cal Tech. You might want to amend your statement and include a 'most' in there. Clearly he is not the only person in this thread who is not done learning. At least you realize it.

I probably met bigger idiots in Tahoe than I did in the fraternity system. The girls in Tahoe were more entitled than the hottest and wealthiest California princess sorority types I met in college, and the Tahoe girls were not even close to hot for the most part. That's what happens when there is a limited resource.
