SessionIf Scott messaged me and asked me what I thought, and showed me those picture. I would tell them they are shit.
Honest question, why do you despise Vishnu so much? It's a couple of college kids making durable playful skis in the U.S. that don't cost an arm and a leg. You seem to relish trashing them at any chance, just wondering why.
The graphics aren't for everyone but you have to respect their uniqueness. It's refreshing compared to just more swathes of color with a logo on top like most ski brands these days

I'm a fan of ski manufacturers, and the art of ski building. They aren't making skis. Anyone can take pre-orders and order from someone that OEM's. These graphics are lazy as fuck, and look like someone spent some time googling stock images and slapping their logo on them.

Doesn't it matter if they are lazy, it matters if kids like them, they still build skis damn good ones too. SO your mad because some kids are moving away from sucking ON3Ps dick and still giving their support to a small ski company providing good cheap skis and circulation?
Either way they are slightly lazy and I fuck with the previous ones more than these, however I can get behind these I fuccs with the clouds or maybe the blossom ones, would love to see the full things though.

Yeah I can definitely see your point with their graphics. I find their general aesthetic to be cheap feeling and not well thought out. Some of the Instagrams are super cringey. However the actual product seems to stand up. Definitely not my cup of tea but people seem to really like them. I can't knock them for selling kids some solid park planks for 3 or 4 hundred bucks

Who is mad? The thread is titled "Thoughts on Vishnu's new graphics". My thought is that they look like shit, and the designer should be emberassed. I don't give a fuck what people buy. At least they didn't give their money to Revision. And it's a super niche brand with a super niche product at best.

They look like garbage. I guess I get it if they don't have the resources to get really great graphics like J Skis or Moment or whatever, but they seriously look shitty. I respect that they're making unique skis that are durable and at a respectable price point, but it's just minimal effort in combination with looking flat out bad that takes away from them. I'd honestly say they look fine if they just came in plain colours or simple twin colour ways like faction with a nice satin finish and the Vishnu logo. I could spend a couple of hours in photoshop mocking up some half decent designs and have a few decent looking options.

Wait they don't even build their skis? Jesus, it's not like they're flat out in the workshop and don't have time to come up with good graphics... what's the excuse for the shit designs?

Vishnu is making these graphics as a semi response to the boring graphics other companies use these days. If you saw any 4 of those graphics on the hill you would immedietly know that their Vishnu. They make skis that hold up well, are easily recognizable from the shape and graphic of the ski, and they also have in my opinion the most creative and most stylish team of skiers bcking up their products.

I'm with you on this, they seem like a good group of guys but this is just another marketing brand. I would like to know if they made test models or if they just had china make them skis and they tested those.
I think the graphics are tight af. Who cares if they are just stock photos they still look tight. J skis has made completely black skis multiple times and also white skis and they don't get hate for "not spending time on their graphics"

You're totally right, some companies will make a one color ski and people will think its sick.

Most of NS hasn't even heard of Vishnu until this year. They're riding the hype train like Revision was, except with worse graphics. The skis are NOT made in the US, they're made in a factory in China. Everyone is calling them "core" when they're really not. Armada is still more core than Vishnu and they're owned by a corporation

Is made in the US the only factor that classifies a company as "core"?

How do you know they're made in China? Where is your evidence for this?
SammyDubzhow are these any different than any "wooden" graphics yall have jizzed yourselves over in the past
You mean the "wooden" graphics that are an actual veneer. Where all the logos are hand cut and place in layup? I don't think you have any idea the effort that goes in to some brands graphics.
K-Dot.Word, last time I talked to one of the owners the had said they were SLC built, my bad.
You're not wrong. "When we first started, our skis were made in salt lake. Due to wanting to actually make money and have our brand continue to grow, they are now made in China by a group of American engineers. "

Super did not fucc w tha pool tiles at first but the more I look at them the more I need a pair 💦💦💦💦💦💦.
Regardless of the company's status as "core" or not, and regardless of the quality of the skis, I think those graphics are lazy, poorly executed, and cheap.
You are a small company who gets to put whatever you want on your skis. That's an incredibly awesome amount of freedom. So why are you putting bad stock photos and patterns on them?
Your brand seems to be trying to foster creativity. Why aren't your skis' graphics creative?

I prefer having a skier lay up my skis than a 9 year old who has never seen snow. Also, R&D takes way longer when you have to wait for your ski to ship back from china.
Moment is arguably the most core company in the game, because they are running from making a good product (not hype) making their skis in nevada, and using 100% fsc certified wood. Also, their revenue goes back into freeskiing, not racing or worse, rubbermaid containers.
Lots of mixed reviews which I love. I designed them along with the help of Parviz Faiz, and I'm not embarrassed, in fact I feel the exact opposite. The "illustrator soup" that plagues ski graphics (color wash with a logo, random images of unicorns, etc.) was one of the motivating factors behind starting this company, in the sense that almost always, less is more. I try to make designs that you look at and immediately think "vishnu". I think I have succeeded with that thus far.
What you don't know about 3 of the 4 of these graphics is that they are not stock images, but actual real life items. The pool one is a heavily manipulated stock image, admittedly. However, the wallpaper one is a high res photo of the inside of an abandoned mining building in Daly Canyon, PC, Utah. That building also appears in our new video, Harvest, where we went skiing on/in it 3 different ways. In fact, if you look closely in one of the clips, you can actually SEE the wall the topsheet was taken from. How many brands have done that? The rug graphic is a high res photo of a priceless Persian rug from an art gallery in Salt Lake City. Something about a handmade piece of art from the 14th century really speaks to me, and they are very rare in person.
The idea of sampling, or using parts of old ideas to make something new, is important to me. The cloud topsheet is sampled from a late Renaissance painting by Raphael and then flipped and copied over and over to make a complete image. It took a lot of work to get it just right, and I'm very happy with how it turned out.
Point is, it's really easy to write us off as a fly by night company that doesn't try and is lazy and not thought out and blah blah blah but that couldn't be further from the truth. We know exactly what we are doing. Okay love you all bye.

Why the decision to have the same, large image drawn out over the entirety of the ski instead of adding some details in here and there to add (for lack of a better word) depth to the graphic? Aside form the carpet one, at first glance they seem to be a bland, drawn out image that doesn't bring much to the table. The backstory you explained adds something to the graphic, but I had to come all the way to the bottom of a gear thread on NS to find out about it.

Answering on my personal account. As I said before, less is more. What you just described is, in my opinion, the problem with ski graphics. When making graphics you are working with a relatively small rectangle compared to a painting or whatever. It is so easy to overload a graphic with imagery and make a messy soup of illustrator filters, when really what people want is something plain, striking, and memorable. Again, my opinion.
Furthermore, what you described is essentially the ski industry standard: cram as much shit on a top sheet as you can. If I followed the industry standard, we wouldn't have made it this far. The people buying our products are people that take pride in standing out. Whether you like these top sheets or not, you must respect the fact that they are different. Going against the grain is what makes Vishnu unique. Doing what you would expect us to do totally defeats the purpose of the brand.
ThaLetterM.Furthermore, what you described is essentially the ski industry standard: cram as much shit on a top sheet as you can.
Just off the top of my head; Faction, Volkl, Head, Salomon, Blizzard, Ninthward, Rossi, and to a lesser extent, Line all have topsheets that are more or less 'simplistic' without an excessive overlay of elements. I wasn't implying they need to go the way of an edollo or vice, but adding one or two small elements so that it's not just a picture of a pool over the ski could go a long way.
I'm not trying to attack the company or the graphics you've decided upon, just voicing my opinion in a thread about people's opinion on your graphics. Without the back story of how each graphic came about, they seem almost diy garage handmade -ish. Like you grabbed some fabric with clouds on it and called it good.

The fact that it seems to be sparking discussion is basically the point, to state it simply. We pride ourselves on the "handmade diy" feel of our topsheets, and the brand overall...from packaging to video content. An "anyone can do it" kind of vibe that separates us from other more "traditionally professional" companies. Hope that makes sense
You guys get your skis produced through someone else, right?
Correct. As I have said before, if I had 200k+ to start a factory, I would. I paid my dues in a hot garage filled with MDF dust and epoxy fumes and we made a pair of prototypes exactly how the team and I wanted them. It took around 8 months. From a business standpoint, obviously that's not feasible at all. Our skis currently are an exact copy of that prototype, made in China by an American company who's employees are paid a fair wage and have a safe work environment. We pay more than most companies for our skis for that very reason. The higher price mark for us means smaller margins, but we feel it is worth it for a quality product. We have complete control and open lines of communication when it comes to production. We don't feel that Chinese products are automatically bad, nor does American made automatically equal "good". In my opinion, that is a misnomer that makes people miss out on excellent products of all kinds. Global economics is a complicated subject obviously but we are doing the best we can with what we have, as fairly as we can.

Wasn't trying to come off as a dick with the question. You seem to be steadily rising in the community compared to the rapid explosion and very quick implosion of revision.
Best of luck to you and I'm excited to see what new models you come out with in the future.

8 months for one ski ? A few years ago i made 3 pairs in like 3 months. Why did it take so long ?
