Was that racist?

We all say dumb shit, sometimes we dont think before we speak and we say the first thing that comes to mind. It isnt always the best thing to say. So heres a place where you can ask the good people of NS if what you said was racist.


Ill start, I play soccer in a coed league and Im a keeper. Keepers are very protective of their box and often get physical with those who try to push them around inside the box. Well a ball was bouncing in I came up and grab the ball. A small Asian girl was coming at me I had the ball clearly before she got there. As she got closer she tried to bump me and push me off balance. I immediately lifted my leg and pushed her to the side. At which point she proceeded to get mad at me for pushing back. I then said " I don't care what you are I will push you if you try to push me." She got a lot more angry than I thought after I said that.

So NS, was that racist?

Its amazing what our modern society had deemed rascist/sexist etc. It makes people like this feel like almost anything can be looked upon as discriminatory.. Sad...

I only specified race because if I didn't the situation at hand wouldn't be fully explained at why it may be taken as racist. Comment I made was meant to be about her being a girl. And I actually was trying to be really inclusive by saying what you are and not that she was a girl. You don't want to assume anyone's gender in 2017.

Everyone is always worried about saying something offensive. If you say something that could be conveieved as racist on accident dont worry about it. Each individual knows if they are racist or arent. If you arent racist but you say something that is, or your thoughts get misconstruded and something weird comes out, dont worry about it.

OP, it sounds like she took offense to not being treated "like a girl" unless maybe you pushed a big harder than necessary? Like if you decked her she'd have every right to get mad. Shoving is part of the game. Race shouldn't have had anything to do with the scenario unless she said something else that could have suggested otherwise.

Next time, I'd leave the "I don't care what you are" part out and just say "if you push me, I'll push you". That implies the equal treatment without bringing up any differences that could lead to misunderstandings.

the whole basis behind this thread opposes that statement, but whatever. A lot of people don't actually know what is/isn't racist due to the fact that we're not totally omniscient to other peoples thoughts.

I have to ask customers if they are employed for my job. I ask every customer. I had a black guy give me a weird look when's i asked him. Turns out he was a lawyer. I had an Indian guy ask me if I asked "everyone" that question. What's the word for people who assume white people are racist?

The idea of this thread is to understand if what someone said was racist. My point was to understand that everyone says things that can be misconstruded as racist. I got caught up in the wording of it I think, I completely understand what you mean now. What I thought you meant was that everyone automatically knew what offended other people, which seems like an impossible task.

I would call them people who often encounter situations where their merits are challenged solely or partially based on the color of their skin so even when thats not the case they are naturally suspicious

I love how nowadays if you are a white male with a well off family you can't talk about race, poverty, sex, or most social problems. You just get yelled at and looked down on for being privileged or mansplaining or some stupid shit. It's getting kind of ridiculous. It's not like I don't sympathize or feel empathetic, but I have to watch my words carefully or I'll get reamed for being a racist/bigot/sexist/misogynist/etc. I spent a few years at Ithaca College (possibly the most liberal school on the East) and the amount of PC and safe space shit was mind blowing. You couldn't joke about anything that might offend someone because they would crucify you. Talk about guns and they look at you like you kill people for funzies. I was blown away. I thought I was a liberal, but apparently I'm more of a libertarian or something. In the real world if get offended, nobody cares, it's a personal problem. Grow up and deal with it, don't be so damn emotional about everything. There are no safe spaces irl.

Can't be as bad as my public speaking class yesterday.. It was food day and one of my classmates, who is Egyptian, brought in some food. As the kid was introducing his dish a kid next to me whispered to his table mate "I wonder if it's made from goat?" The idiot who just got asked that then proceeds to ask the kid presenting out loud if it was made of goat. He didn't even realize that the kid who whispered it was being racist until after the kid presenting took it harshly. Kinda made for an awkward time in class

If you called her a gook or slant eyes or dog eater or swamp rat or if you asked her how hairy her bush is, then it would maybe be racist.

However you're a keeper and you can basically do whatever the fuck you want so why do you care? Next time you knock her out for trying to pull that late hit crap.

A lot of people seem to forget that being offended is a choice. If you're offended by something, it's because you decided to be. And that's the problem with all these snowflakes now. Anything that may be even SLIGHTLY related to race or sex is now taken as offensive that they feel they should receive some sort of protection from that.

Being offended is a reaction to a stimulus, just the same as being angry, sad, hungry, pleased, etc. Becoming angry with someone who calls your mom a whore is not a choice. It is a reaction. The choice is what you do after feeling that anger- do you calm your self down or punch the guy in the face? Being offended is no different. Someone calls you a racist slur and you get offended, it is a reaction to what they said. The choice is what you do next after becoming offended.

Now what these snowflakes do is voice their being offended, which is a choice. They are choosing to make you feel bad for what you said or choosing to ask for protection from what you said.
