How much wax to wax a ski?

The question was "How much wax does one use to wax a ski?"
Obviously there are many variables. Ski length and width just a part.
The type of waxes and prior base preparation all come into play here.
Here we use basic hydrocarbon waxes that are what is used for base preparation and "general" skiing. Then we talk a bit about high performance waxing. Unless you are super into it and racing etc. , don't worry about those fancy waxes. Main thing is wax with hydrocarbons well. Wax often. Scrape and brush well and fun you will have. This also assumes you have a well tuned ski.

I have many friends at my local hill who are convinced the best thing to do is to just never, ever, not even once, wax a pair of skis. Am I crazy or are they fucking idiots?

The audio sucks but who cares. It's a frickin' waxing deal. BTW it is two channel, just the onboard mic. It does some weird stuff.

You could, but that's a really bad idea. Any wax left on the base only provides a layer of soft stuff where all the junk can stick to, then the ski gets slow really fast.



In this case you can see all the crap that stuck to this ski from the crappy wax job the Mt. shop did. They did not even brush the wax out. They for sure did not scrape for shit and that's for real. A properly scraped and brushed ski would not have been like this one. Check it out. BTW, I would not use HC-3 anymore, I would use Swix Glide Wax Cleaner instead.

Just drip some tip to tail, as little as you can while still having enough to cover the whole base. Less is more

You can see how I "do it" in the video on the starting post of this thread. Iron slides much better that way.

No worries. I have lots of ski tuning waxing videos. Free learning from one with years of experience.

I know most of the folks here are younger's, and I like to be helpful.

How much wax is kind of simple, yet the video is fun to watch anyway.

I guess I'm extra lazy
..Ive always just melted it on with an old clothes iron then smoothed it out... I let the snow do the scraping, all the extra wax comes off after a few runs. And then it slides real fast..

If it is really all coming off that way you are..........

No. 1 Using crappy wax.
No. 2 Not waxing very well.
No. 3 Waxing a dirty greasy base
These are just a few reasons that could be.

Here is what you should do after a good waxing of a cleaned base.

Cheap skis with extruded bases can be okay like that, but even those will do much better with frequent waxing assuming you use the right wax for the snow conditions and scrape, brush well.

Also, I find people that only ski a few times a season just don't wax and they don't know the difference.
In this case they just have no point of reference.

Sometimes people who are very large weight like a ski that goes slow as a heavy person always goes faster.
It's a form of speed control. Problem is there, they never learn to ski too good like that either.

I skied a lot last season and I had no problems but it also could be that I’m 113 pounds

One reason they were so bad is because the crappy quick wax at the Mt. They left a ton of wax on the skis. It was as if they did not brush out the skis at all.
