Do older skiers still jib?

Seems like I see way more young kids hitting rails than older guys/chicks. Obviously people quit skiing park as they get older and get injured or don't care about tricks anymore, but with jumping the difference is not so obvious. I am curious to know what the older demographic thinks about jibbing?

Tom wallisch does, my dad is 47 and he still jibs, He dont do jumps anymore because it will kill his knees be he's got some clean 2 on pretz 2 on a flat down rail

25 is a low number....

I'm 32 and currently can't ski park due to recovering from PRP injections in my patellar tendons, but I'll be back in the park and streets asap.

i agree, i mean hell there are several top street pros older than 25, but i think OP might be alluding to the fact that even if your body is in great shape at this point, your life isn't such that you can be risking injury as much as when you were younger

im 29 and dont ski as much as id like anymore, but physically im perfectly fine. i can't afford to risk injuries so much these days, but i still hit jumps and rails and do flips and shit.

anyone who is in bad enough physical shape by 26 that they cant ski hard hasnt taken care of their body well at all (barring a serious accident or something)

im 35 and still hit rails all the time... we have a local dude in his late 50s thats still learning new tricks pretty often

I actually prefer rails way more as I get older and more risk averse. When you sketch out on a jump there's less control and a bigger fall than from rails

I'm in Bishop's generation. 38 here, and I still lap park with consistent 5's, 7's, backies, and a respectable rail game. Fear of being out of work over an injury increases every year especially with my family.


The way I look at it though, if you can dial in a trick to the point where you feel completely comfortable sending it without any real effort, then you're set for a long time... as long as you keep that muscle memory and continue to send that trick on occasion.


Let's face it though, the body breaks down and the body doesn't heal itself as well as it used to. We can't continue to do this shit forever.


It will be interesting to see how old kids from this new generation will be that are still getting after the park.

Terrain parks are relatively new that started with late genxers, we are just older now. The oldschooler newschooler line seems to be at 40 right now.

A coach on my freestyle team recently stopped skiing at 39 I think. He could do any rail trick no problem. 2 pretz 2, super fed, anyrhing. Also he had some sick switch misties and switch corks. Stoping a switch 12 tail at 36.

37 and just started hitting rails again. Never stopped spinning in the park. Yesterday was my first proper rail (not box) in 7 years. Felt awkward, scary and strangely familiar.

Now to nurse that sore lower back...

38 and will hit rails all day if my camera isn't on me, cruise switch a ton and love doing butters. It's funny when you get older and have responsibilities you don't take as many risks on big features. I will still hit big jumps when my knees are feeling ok. Always having fun when on my skis and that is all that matters. Age is a number.

I wish I knew the guy's name, but there's an older guy at 7 springs who fucking rips. It looked like he had gray beard so I'm assuming he was at least in his mid 30's. He threw some of the cleanest 7's I've seen!

29 and I'll hit rails and small kickers. More into riding creatively all mtn , buttering off of everything and throwing 3s off natural hits.

Starting to get into touring which is the natural progression from being a park rat in the mid 2000s

Apparently I feel the exact opposite of everyone else who is old. IMO rails are boring but jumps kick ass. Not much beats a shitload of air time, and for some reason i still prefer a poorly built, unsafe jump to a perfectly manicured and engineered park jump. As long as you're having fun and passing it along though, who really cares what you're doing!?

I turn 31 this year and I still am progressing on rails. I am starting to tone down the jumps though, injuries take a LOT longer and I have other things that are important to me (my career, my fiance, maybe kids soon, etc) and that turns down the huck factor.

If I'm feeling it though and conditions are favorable, i'll still take my vitamin send.

I suck on rails though...mostly just small presses. Telemark bindings are maybe not the optimal solution to learn rails,I guess, heh...been thinking about changing back to alpines or at least buying another decent alpine twintip set for the park.

Started core training a few years ago, I guess that'll help. Should have started years earlier - the benefits are so clear. Stretching is essential too.

I guess (when you're older) the key is to be much more careful/calculating on what to hit and listen to your body very carefully. Can't ski 100% on everyday anymore - so gotta use those days when you really feel it and the conditions are optimal. Also, pow/all mountain is always preferred...so, no need to wreck yourself before big trips etc. All in all that means that progressing is much harder as it is hard to get enough days to get lots of repetition. Anyway, as said above, at this age is all about the fun and no need to compare yourself to the other skiers all the time and feel any pressure.

I am 33. I just found that my focus shifted from park to BC after awhile. When I was 19 or 20 I would forego good pow days to ski park because it was new and cool, and that was where the action was. I still like park but unless it's completely fucked in the BC I'll probably have more fun searching for fresh turns. Also back before I had touring gear we pretty much had to bootpack to get anywhere and that is a huge bitch/completely impossible so I would only hike if I was feeling really motivated.

at 30 i don't nearly get as much ski time in as i used to and i can't afford to hurt myself financially. i prefer to ski the whole mountain more then i used to, like going really fast switch all over.

when i am loosened up and warm i will hit pretty much all the rails at bear and ski the jump line.

already have my mid week pass for the coming season so hoping to ski at least once a week. then i will get some tricks back.
