International Women's Day

So today is International Women's Day! Women are encouraged to not go to work, wear red, and avoid shopping. Everything im reading has those three things as what women all over the world should do today.

Can someome please explain to me why women are being encouraged not to shop? I mean I get the idea that they're trying to show women's economic impact by not shopping, but seriously, doesnt that seem a bit patronizing? Like one of the two things to show your impact, shopping? Way to play into a sterotype and make people think all women can do is work and shop.

Ok the problem about the whole feminist movements and all these things going on is that it is sheer narcism. I saw all those women protesting and marching and was thinking, how many of these people are actually doing anything legitimate besides jumping on the bandwagon and posting shit on their social media profiles?

I saw a ton of women marching a few weeks back, but how many of those women are volunteering at their local women's shelters or actually doing anything to impact change?

Also, all these claims that men are being misogynistic against women and that women aren't getting treated fairly are also complete bullshit.

Let me tell you something, this whole new generation of women is the most aggressive, animalistic little piglets in the world.

Have you seen the shit the women are posting on their instagram and social media profiles? They are posting pictures where you can basically see their lungs from their assholes. My god the pictures girls are posting pictures of them where you can see everything, how are men supposed to act towards them when they don't even have respect for themselves and their bodies?

I really dont care about any of that, just wanted an answer on why shopping is so important and one article said to "resist shopping for the day". It just sounds so stupid and makes the day seem so dumb if shopping is important enough to be one of the key three things.

All these girls on Instagram are funny. They all post about women not being equal enough yet that's the only thing they do about it, complain on social media. They're all the girls who also acted like they were hippie girls in the 60s in high school.

I support the cause of equality stuff, but by having a day you declare a women's day you're essentially saying every other day is a man's day. A little bit backwards in my opinion.

This isn't entirely true. I'm a member of a secret facebook group (means it doesn't come up when you search but I could post a print screen) called Indivisible Washington State. There are groups in most states. They have daily "to dos" of activism that support the overall movement. Granted, the membership is only 26,000 people...and 26,000 is a small amount of the some 150k that marched in Seattle, but it is still a lot of people participating daily in efforts that you're completely unaware of.

I don't doubt that you are right about quite a few, but I also think that you are wrong about quite a few.

Look I know how to quote reply, I swear.

The point is that it was just supposed to be a "day without a woman" to show the importance of women in society. The main impact that anyone has on a daily basis (men or women) is working, going places, and spending money.

The irony isn't lost on me, though.

Wearing red was for those who couldn't afford to, or weren't able to stay home from work to show that they support the cause.

here is an example of the "daily dos" from today:

1. Since you've got your calendar out, take a look at this info from the League of Women Voters of Washington and look at attending a town hall with one of your state legislators. Most of them are this Saturday, March 11th. Don't know your district? There's a link to check it on the site. http://participate.lwv.org/…/sal…/web/common/public/content…

2. Help protect the environment for the future: read up on HB 1646, the carbon tax bill proposed by the Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy, introduced by Joe Fitzgibbon. The targets in this bill need to be consistent with returning our climate to 350 ppm of carbon in the atmosphere. The current language targets 450 ppm. Read up on it here: http://350seattle.org/legislation/

3. Afterwards, call your state representatives and members of the House Environment Committee to let them know that HB 1646 deserves support, but it should be amended to include the stronger emission targets that were in HB 1372. Tell them to be climate champions! Committee member info here:

4. Also, check out HB 1611 - Oil Transportation Safety Bill which creates commonsense protections from oil spills, which we’ll need more than ever if the Trans Mountain pipeline comes online. Tell your state representatives to support this bill.

I was far more inspired by my girlfriend and colleagues who went to work. This whole thing seems to be perpetuated by people preaching unity but care more about divisiveness. Giving women in the office the day off simply for being a woman directly opposes the values of feminism as doesn't it?

haha my english professor (my english professor is a single chick btw) walked in to class and said

"looks like some of the girls are missing today, they must be on the womens day strike. Unfortunately I have a responsibilities; a job and groceries to buy, so I cant take the day off"
