Rodiganneeds a FWT win or two and another good few years of next level skiing before we can be chatting like that. I get what you're saying though
nicofogliaI honestly think that Markus Eder could be the man, he has some serious park skills w/ a nine knight win and some podiums at the FWT. And also all his videos and edits are dope
saskskierI'm not sure there are many out there who are comparable simply because they aren't as well rounded. How many kids start off racing or in moguls these days and have that set of technical skills as a foundation to build off of? I would argue that's a huge reason guys from the Candide/T-Hall/CR/Pep/JP generation are so well rounded and can adapt to pretty much any terrain.
dan4060I don't know if we will ever see anyone win pipe/park xgames medals AND win the overall Freeride World Tour title and produce incredible big mountain (and park) film segments. The amazing thing is that Candide was a wild card for the first FWT event that year, and won the event. They kept giving him wild cards and he kept killing it. Also, remember that the FWT does not always have the best snow conditions. Those guys are often slaying in sub-prime conditions. Some of the most impressive skiing I have seen him do was at the Verbier event on the Bec De Ross. A lot of people thought Candide would take a less technical line, if there is such a thing on that face, with fluidity and big airs. Instead, he got skied the most technical part of the peak and finished it off with some huge airs. It was impressive because people knew Candide could kill it on big cliffs and fluid lines but not how technical he was in big mountain terrain. I would like to see what he can do on a Sage style spine wall. I have seen him destroy other types of big mountain terrain but never an ultra-technical spine wall like Dr. Seuss, Hotel Room, or Corrugated Face. You have to work your way up in that sort of terrain but I would not be against Candide.
I hope we see someone else like him, but I don't know if we will. Many of the leaders in the park scene 10-15 years ago, Candide, Tanner, CR, Pep, Jon, Henrik Windstedt, also skied big mountain even if they were not always filmed doing it. Sammy comes the closest, but out of the current crop of xgames contenders I don't know who can step into that realm. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe these guys are skiing big mountain when they are not at contests, but if they aren't then we won't see guys like Candide and CR and Tanner. It seems to take such focus to stand on the podium these days that you really can't do much of anything else. Look at pipe/park, is there anyone capable of competing for gold in both of those disciplines? I'm asking because I don't know. Tanner, CR, Candide and Jon could do that stuff AND ski big mountain. The year CR and Candide revolutionized pipe, I think 2003, CR also put together one of the best movie segments of the year. He hit backcountry kickers, skied big lines in bad snow and mixed in some tricks off cliffs. The movie was Focused and that part stands up today. If you watch the extras Scott Gaffney talks about how bad the snow CR got for his big mountain lines was and how hard he killed it despite that. This post is not meant to be a "what's wrong with kids today" rant, and I hope it's not coming off that way, but I think the incredible focus it takes to compete in the xgames/Olympics might prevent some of these guys from branching out into different types of skiing. Sammy might be the last of a dying breed, although I really hope he isn't.
Like I said before, Richard Permin is pretty awesome but he is almost Candide's age. The segment Permin put together in Superheroes of Stoke could have stood up as BOTH a park and a big mountain segment. Murray Wais even comments that Richard is skiing at absolutely the highest level in both park and big mountain, something he did not think was possible.
