eheathOtherwise i watch premium tv shit like hbo and other good shows on tv, its nice to be able to record and skip commericals on regular channels. But basic cable programing is usually fucking awful so if youre cool with waiting for it to come on Netflix or something then fuck it.
Hugh_Conway_jr...the only thing cable is good for is if you like to watch sports... so I have been told. I don't watch the kinds of sports cable delivers... now I have go through the pain in the ass procedure of return the box and canceling again.
eheathI like having cable, but I also enjoy watching sports most times of the year. You can get networks for free through an HD antenna so its better than nothing.

The only thing is its so expensive so unless youre sharing a subscription with roommates it becomes extremely unaffordable for someone under 30.
Hugh_Conway_jrBeing out of the cable game for so long, all the stuff going to Crave and netflix new to me... very awesome.
If there was channel called "last years HBO" on basic cable, i would probably keep it
eheathI mean hbonow is $15/mo not that bad really. They get a ton of amazing movies and have archives of epic shows and tons of great current shows. I will definitely pick up a hbonow account if i stopped buying cable.
bdarb207cable is shit. You can stream literally any show you want on you computer. Such a waste.
Plus all the commercials.. They should be paying you for the right to be in your house.
eheathSure you can stream shit, but its a crapshoot to stream live TV. I streamed a hockey game the other day with some of my buddies, it was only on NHL center ice, and about 20% of the time we had a functioning high quality stream.
But cable is so expensive. I think we will see more and more networks "unbundling" and offering their network to people without cable subscriptions, just might take a bit longer.
bdarb207my gripe is more with commercials. I just can't stand them.
eheathIndeed, commercials are the fucking worst, but DVR is getting really good these days. In the last like 10 years if you wanted to record a bunch of shows, you needed a TiVo because most cable and satellite providers limited the fuck out of their dvr. Now its pimp as fuck, especially with the X1 system, fuck i can talk to my remote haha. I record everything I want to watch and start watching it like 20-30 mins after it starts live so I can skip the commercials while I watch.
swiggityYea my issue isn't quite with commercials because as ehealth says, you can just record stuff and skip them later

doublecupwhat do u mean by getting an HD antenna? how does that work if u connect it to say a laptop that has wifi internet?
eheathYeah I'm actually quite surprised with what I used to go through watching TV, the best thing ever now is recording a movie on TV and being able to skip through commercials and watch it, game changer really.
eheathHD antenna hooks up to your TV, there are a bunch of different kinds but basically it picks up a digital over the air signal (similar to old rabbit ears style) and you get like 10-15 HD channels, local networks like abc, nbc, fox, etc. I know people who just put a paperclip in their coax input on their TV and they pick up these channels.
doublecupdo u know an antenna box or something that u can buy on amazon or something that works with a laptop and wifi?
(i dont have a tv or a cable outlet)
eheathI mean you can stream tons of TV online through sketchy websites, the only service I know of is sling tv, which is a month subscription.
doublecupYa i know a ton of sites such as putlocker, project free tv, etc.
i mean pretty much any episode of a show you can just google search: [show name] watch free online
i was just wondering about live tv
usually live streams are choppy as fuck and the quality is horrible
swiggyI'm doubtful there's a simple solution to doing this on a laptop, there isn't really an input on most to use it as a display, and I think hd antennas require some sort of cable input. This could maybe work on some desktop monitors but I'm not 100% sure about that

bdarb207This is G. What are you looking at per month for this kind of stuff like 75-100 bucks?
eheathYeah about that, where i live its included in my rent so i dont have exact numbers.
bdarb207Ours too. I don't even know if we can get this. You can bet I'm checking though ahah
eheathWell it depends on your situation. I've lived in apts that have "basic cable included" through the HOA and i paid $10/mo for HD and then another $10/mo for expanded channels, HBO and such was extra too. Now I live in a town house, my buddy owns it, so he just includes all of the utilities in rent, so we have like a pretty standard house setup for cable/internet.
