Park Report App

I think it would be more important to know if the ski hills and park crew are gonna use it. If the don't keep it updated this won't work.

If the app is quality and reliable people will check this, instead of there mountains online site

Really good idea! Was thinking of the same thing earlier this season but I have no clue about building apps. Would be cool if it had a layout of the park from google maps or something where people could add in the current features so you get an overview of exactly whats set up and where

Its a great idea, I would use it to see whats in the park before I get there. The hard thing about this being user sourced is that unlike Waze (which I had heard once is all user sourced information) when skiing people are pulling out their phones every second they are stopped or have a free moment. I think you will be relying heavily on park crews and resorts to give you the info.

If you sell it to resorts well, I think you can get a buyin and have them help. It will help them gain customers because its just like the way Vail does it with their EpicMix app. You are able to check lift lines, open lifts, and open runs before you even get to the mountain. Now here is another way for them to give you more data about the park that they didn't give out before.

I would try to figure out why Vail has not done something like this on their EpicMix app and I would also try to make sure that when you talk to resorts, don't talk to Vail untill you are up and running, have a full userbase and a brand that will not be easily taken over by Vail if they just add this feature to their already widly used app. It seems like Vail could easily steal this idea and add it as a feature.

One thing I would really want in an app like this is the ability to see the park, an upload photo option would be very awesome. You could also try to build some type of social platform where people can upload their runs/edits are specific parks so others can see what people people hitting and the tricks their doing.

Depending on what it is I would be down to use it probably.

I think a basic page first with the mountain name, number of parks, number of features would be cool.

For instance

Loon,
4 parks,
120 features( just guessing)

Have some way to have favorite mountains. Maybe have the ability to tag a features with a photo.

Maybe there's a flat down rail at Keystone. You click it and there are 5 user submitted photos tagging that rail. Something like that could be cool. Maybe even a rating system for best photos of said feature to encourage people to use it.

If possible some sort of easy way to tell people "halfpipe will be closed to day but reopen monday" or things like that could be cool. Especially if you had a mountain on your favorites list.

Something like that could personalize it toward the people using said mountain. Maybe you ride copper. It alerts you "5 new features" or " big jump line closed for contest".

Idk anything about making apps but I feel like that's the kind of info people are looking for.

For ease of use, maybe add a ton of potential features people can add to their parks. Or use what people submit to show up in a menu. Let's say timberline adds a "flat down rail" "dfd box" and 30' step down jump". List those back in the menu for when other people build the park.


Idk. I'm definitely interested.It really depends on how the app is laid out, what it entails, and if you can get people actively using it.

Thanks. I hadn't thought about Vail in that way. I don't know what their situation with developers is, but I definitely don't want them to beat me to market.

I def think having the ability to upload and possibly rate photos would give people enough incentive to upload. Also would make the quality of the photos shown first higher. Then if you could see most features, maybe people would be more likely to use it to have a gander.

Def add a report feature. Because I'll probably upload a picture of a donkey dick as a donkey dick to see how high a rating it gets. Be on the lookout. Don't trust me :)

I work park crew and would for sure use this to update the public on what's good. Solid idea

Definitely go for the user sourced information approach. There's potential for abuse or exaggeration if you only let the resorts handle it.

haha maybe. I don't think people in general would do that though.

Ideally I'll have both user sourced and park sourced info. I think they'll balance each other out

DstanI'm working on an app that I'm hoping to be like On the Snow or Open Snow but specifically for park features, reports, and conditions. My idea is to have park reports be mainly user sourced because I don't want to rely wholly on resorts to keep reports current and accurate, but allow parks to post official reports if they want to.
I also want to include a day counter so you can keep track of how many days you ski in a season and give the user statistics about their riding.

I started working on it already, but realized that was stupid and that I should get some validation before I get too far into the coding.

I have a basic mock-up of the app and I'm hoping to get some feedback on whether you'd use this, whether the features I'm planing on including in the first version are good, bad, or insufficient, or really anything else except design (too early in the process for that).

I agree. I already have basic data on resorts. I'm looking at other apps that crowd source data and trying to figure out what the right incentives for reports are. Giveaways, gamifying it by giving users badges or points, things like that.

My biggest worry is that if someone opens it for the first time and there aren't any reports for their mountain, then they likely won't come back. So I'm going to try to have some reports entered before launch

I think I would get kind of used but the best use for it is you could get the publics opinion to the park crew so they know what should be done or what is great.

That's a good point. It could be useful from that angle as well. And thanks, I'll keep you in mind for early next season. I'll definitely need people willing to post reports before launch.
