So interestingly enough, this is exactly what Hot Dogging was all about. Acro (which became Ballet) was way more about using your skis to show total mastery over them. More like flat land BMX than figure skating. The Bunch is basically bringing back Acro to its roots, which is why a bunch of the things this guy is doing like the tip pops and the tail manuals look so familiar.

Hot Dogging was ruined when it became an Olympic sport. Acro became ballet so it was closer to figure skating, moguls became a fixed-style race down a perfect unnatural zipper line and aerials became about executing a flawless version of the highest technical trick possible.

Its the reason that the older crowd has so many people that hate what is happening in Competition skiing. We remember hot dogging and how rad, free and creative it was. We also remember what happened after the focus became on competitions.

I would definitely argue this guy is by no means the first documented "Freeskier" as you said - I'd argue that the entire movement of Hot Dogging was just the founders of Freeskiing... skiers these days just forget that.

That is dope. I'm sure you are right about other's before too. Snow just makes some people want to get really creative and go nuts. It's like a natural instinct. People were probably messing around with freestyle tricks before recorded history in the very early primitive days of skiing.

You're right - that was Rick Sylvester. He also did the first ski BASE for that movie. Not sure why they put that in a Stein Eriksen tribute video. Nevertheless, Stein was one of the first to flip on skis and was doing lots of other freestyle stuff at the time.

here is a movie called 'The Moebius Flip' that was made in 1969. the Moebius flip is a back flip 360... this movie is about a bunch of people tripping on acid searching how to do the moebius flip (which was never done before on skis). So stoked I made this thread! :) Amazing to see the history of this all and how it seemed to sprout around the world almost simultaneously. I assume this was a by-product of new ski technology and an ode to the human desire to spin, flip and fly. Also, all of these films are just as interesting cinematically as they are athletically. I think this is interesting to see as B&E and The Bunch are doing things in the same vein with a modern twist.

really, I don't think so. Yes, the comps suck but people don't care about the sport or friend they are all about being better and flexing on social media, everywhere I look its kids getting shots for an insta edit and complaining. So why not put the camera away and go have fun go ski with your friends go pack a lunch and go up in the mountains, build some features, learn to ski. Kids just talk shit, complain, and think about gear. I'm not saying I'm above this as I do this sometimes as well, but I feel like back then it was just everyone was having a good time being sketchy and skiing it just seems grand.

Well I mean you're not entirely wrong. There is definitely too many people vying the social media game. That is a great point.

Yeah I see that but they are still a dying breed. A lot of the fun film festivles and movies, events and such that meant the world to me stopped going on which reall sucked. We used to have the lane perrish memorial comp here and it was just a ton of people getting trashed and having a good time until it was shut down for some reason, same with IF3, orage master, levek 1 used to come here, we used to have a ton of premiers and cool shit going down but now all thats left is the pro am janns (which is racing but the crowds and slush are fun) amd the Banff film festivle. Idk I just seem to see less and less people ripping the mountain or having a good time here anymore. I love the mountain but am fixing to go to a place with more people, bigger mountains, and better social or nightlife in a few years.
