How Hard Is BMX?

With summer approaching I'm looking to get into a new sport, and BMX tops the list. How tough is it to get into? I realize a bike will be pricey, but lets say I want to hit ledges and rails and stuff, is that gonna take me years? Any other BMXers on here? I've been skating for years but could never get too serious about it.

The only thing i know about BMX is that it looks like a (potential) beating for your balls.

I tried it one summer and within a week or two I was able to bunny hop (whatever it is called) over a foot tall rail and do a crappy double peg grind on said rail as well. Can't really speak for harder tricks but I'm sure it wouldn't take you too long to be able to have fun hopping up and down ledges and perhaps grinding some small stuff.

I didn't really stick with it but it seems like eating shit can be a bit more painful or high consequence than with skateboarding.

Go for unicycling! I've never done bmx before, but mountain unicycling is super sick, and a really good exercise.

I wouldn't spend a bunch of money on your first bike. Get something under 500. Can find some decent stuff for 3 or 4.

Ride it around, hit some trails, ride the park, jump some stairs. See what you think of it.

I used to love it. Don't ride anymore though.

Learn 180s and 360s. Spend a bit extra and get a freecoaster and have a blast rolling backwards and doing sliders. Learn manuals and manual everything you can. Find a manual pad and you'll be busy for hours.

Dude I am in the exact same position as you. skated a bit but Its just not right for me and now debating whether or not to kill 300+ on something I'm not sure how much i'm gonna like/use. I think Im just gonna wait for a cheep one to pop up on craigslist.

ive been looking at getting into bmx, apparently fakies are easier with a cassette at first, since the backwards peddling helps you balance. once you've learned to do that get a freecoaster to do faster fakies.
