Salomon MTN Lab + 15/16 Griffon

I went over to Evo Seattle last night to try on some Technica cochises and DB Lupos, I've been dreaming about a do it all boot that I could click into my griffon resort setup as well as a new set of kingpins on the touring skis.

Well I did not feel like I could ski any size of the cochise or the lupo, I was completely blown away by the fit and flex of the Salomon MTN lab; so I bought that boot.

The rockered lugged sole of the MTN Lab is not supposed to be alpine compatible but I feel like I could easily make it work in my griffons.

Have any of you guys tried this combo out? I bought these binders this season and it would be a shame to have to buy a new set of alpine bindings AND tech units.

The touring boot sole is not safe to use in regular alpine bindings. However, Marker added their "Sole I.D." tech to the Griffons this year so if you do actually have this year's model you can use the MTN Labs in them. Check the toe piece and look for a badge on the front of the base plate that says "Sole ID" and has a screw underneath. If it's got it then you can adjust the binding to work with the touring sole (check out Marker's site for instructions - it's pretty simple)

The Salomon MTN Labs aren't compatible with Marker Griffons, due to the height-adjustable AFD not having enough clearance to accommodate the rockered sole profile, therefore won't lie completely flat in the toe unit. A traditional Alpine Touring boot with a flat sole however, is compatible with Marker Griffons.

Not sure what you mean by a touring boot with a flat sole, but I know plenty of people that use their MTN Labs in the Salomon Guardian which uses similar MNC tech like Sole ID. The only type of boots I know of that won't work in MNC bindings are randonee boots like the Backland, TLT series, etc that don't have a long enough plastic toe block to fit securely in the toepiece.

Hopefully some bootfitters chime in to really clear this up.

What I was meaning by a flat sole - An AT Boot that has no tech inserts, therefore, has a more traditional looking flat toe than most AT Boots with tech inserts that have a rockered toe.

I could be wrong.

Thanks guys, I quickly realized that this boot/binding combo would not be safe for lateral release w/o serious modification. I think im gonna try and find a mnc binding.

Or like grind down the soles of my new boots.... Non interchangeable soles at that, kinda scary, I think Im gonna buy the new griffon or a warden MNC.

You can run the Salmon MTN lab (or explore) in either a Salomon/Atomic Warden 13 MNC or Marker Griffon/Jester ID (16/17 version).

The new griffon/jester use the same hole pattern, so you won't need to drill extra holes in your new skis.

The new sole ID marker series will work with the lupo carbons. But the MTNs will work with the salomon bindings. Grip walk vs WTR soles are different, though very close. Ive skied my lupos in P18s which is far from correct but high dins hold ya in.
