be patient, tell them to do pizza and french fries.

Start him off with some stretches with the boots on. Go over the bindings and stuff pretty clearly. Get him to put on one ski, and push himself in a circle, then do the same for the opposite ski. Get both skis on, and just have him skate/push around, to get used to the feeling of sliding. Then, take him to the base of the bunny hill, and depending on the snow conditions/angle of hill, teach him to sidestep/herringbone up the hill 10-30 feet. Have him slide down, and glide to a stop. Repeat the same thing several times, then introduce the snowplow. Once he can stop, get him on the magic carpet (lift if your hill doesn't have one), and start working on getting down the hill. Start to introduce parallel turns once he is comfortable getting down the hill. There are some good exercises on youtube for going from a snowplow to a parallel turn. Good Luck!

be patient as shit. It will really help if you try and learn something like snowboarding or tele at the same time so you don't get bored waiting yourself

Im a ski instructor! a couple things to keep in mind; learning takes time, an hour and a half lesson can get them up to turning or it could just be stopping! for different people it takes more or less time to do certain things. the general pattern for learning is gliding, stopping, pizza turns and thne introduce parallel turns. A good thing to practice parallel turns is tapping their inside ski on the snow close to their outside ski as they turn. and then hopping in between turns helps with balance. after they nail the tapping get them to keep their inside ski up for the entire turn as high as they can. For hockey stops start out with garlands? i think they are called or 1 foot j turns!

jlens05I've never really taught somebody how to ski, and I haven't taken lessons in at least 10 years. I'm taking my friend skiing for his first time ever and I'm pretty confident I'll be able to just show and reinforce the basics, but what are some easy tips or drills mabye I can do to get him going?

I mean honestly if you can convince him to take a lesson, that is a huge plus. Ski instructors who are super dialled can ramp someone up more in an hour than you could in three weeks.

#1 if they're a beginner is keeping their weight forwards. Getting in the back seat is bad no matter how you look at it so pressure on the shins in the front of your boots and hands in front is a big step.
