patagonialukeyes you can ski pretty hard on Kingpins (https://vimeo.com/191755442 http://quiksilver.com/snow/events/oneofyourdays/ )
However, I'd say it depends on what kind of touring you're doing and realistically how much you'll be in the resort vs. BC. A frame binding might make better sense if you're planning on mostly doing shorter tours and spending a fair amount of time in the resort.
cydwhitLuke's right.
Also, it's good to remember that safety is different from how well they ski.
The kingpins are more a crap-shoot release dependability wise than say a true alpine binder, or a frame binding, or even like a Vipec with lateral toe release.
If you're not messing up you can hit jumps on anything. I've hit the big park line at Targhee on Speed Turns, but that's way different than hucking my meet to a questionable tranny, even if the landing is better in the backcountry.
So if you're only doing short tours with a lot of hucking a frame binder makes a ton of sense, but I do trust my kingpins a lot.
soupheard of sammy carlson? watched his movie from last year? hes on kingpins in all of it.
cobra_commanderHow many pairs did he break in the process?
CastWanted to jump in here and let you guys know that we've moved on from the SI&I System in favor of creating a touring binding integrated into the Look Pivot. We will be releasing the binding this spring and starting a pre-order sale for the fall.
Although we don't have final weights for a production model, touring mode is coming out pretty close to the Kingpin. Alpine mode is essentially the same as the Look Pivot, meaning it's good for jumps, safe, and skis better than any other binding.
We'll release a 8-18 DIN and later a 4-14 DIN. We're not necessarily trying to create the burliest touring binding we can, we're making one that's safe, tours well, and can ski wherever you want. I personally love being able to ski every day on one setup. Sled skiing, big tours and in the resort /park. Boots are coming along also which is awesome.
We're finishing up some ease of use details were excited about, namely, a step-down auto-locking brake retainer, two climbing bail heights easy to use with a ski pole, and auto-locking interchange mechanisms between toe pieces. We'll also do both ISO 5355 and WTR AFDs.
We're doing what we can to keep costs down and are shooting for $650 retail. We'll be releasing a full press release soon with more details and pics! Stay tuned and let me know if you've got questions.
cheers,
si

patagonialukeI know it's not even at full production yet, but are you guys planning to go beyond the pivot chassis to perhaps an MNC binding like the Jester/Griffon I.D. or Warden? Would be sweet to be able to use with the increasing number of burly touring boots with ISO 9523 soles.

souphes on kingpins in all of it.
snowpocalypseKingpins off the market due to lawsuit
http://www.powder.com/gear/g3-sues-marker-kingpin-binding/
Old news but here ya go if anybody is interested.
GREEN_BASTARDThe lawsuit has not reached an outcome yet. That's likely only temporary as marker will probably have to pay G3 royalties on the brake system.
snowpocalypseThe lawsuit has not reach an outcome so my statement stands. Marker has been ordered to stop selling Kingpins in the US market. I'm not going to speculate as to what the outcome will be, just stating facts.
cobra_commanderMarker will likely settle with G3 before November. They aren't gonna sit out a season not selling arguably the best freeride touring binding on the market.
DeepskierIf you’re into touring the only three options you need to look at (IMO) are kingpins, cast and daymakers. It just depends on you and how you ski and what you’re doing on em. If you ask me daymakers are the fucking shit. Bees knees
J_BergDaymakers? wow hahah theyre bad

SkerbyFrom what I can tell online, the cast system looks like it's incompatible with ISO 9523? I have a pair of MTN Labs that I am loving, I wanna try Cast, but I don't think the look toe piece is compatible.
I tried to fit these in an old griffin toe, and it did not appear to be safe.
