Noob shifty question

Hey NS, I know this is a noob question but I'm trying to learn simple tricks and progress this year. I want to learn how to shifty but whenever I try it feels so scary to me to move my skis for a simple right shifty. How do I get over this? And is the rotation with your ankles, knees or hips? Im talking about just a simple shifty where you turn you skis to the left or right, thanks.

Sit in an office chair and move your hips and legs one way with your arms in the air in front of you. You'll probably notice that your shoulders naturally move the other way and your torso hardly moves at all.

Now try doing it in the air rather and you'll do a shifty.

when i first started doing them it helped me to remind myself to lift my feet up at the knees (and this is a key in tons of tricks period!)

also, you said youre a noob, which makes me think youre probably not getting a lot of air/hang time. the bigger you go (within comfort, of course) the easier it is to do a shifty without worrying about having enough time to get your landing gear back straight. so what im saying is, just keep practicing, youll get comfortable going bigger and being in control as you do so

Also, if you keep your edges in landing safe position at all times, you can even land shifty and ride away sideways if that makes you feel more comfortable with progressing

Haha finally, a trick that I'm actually good enough at to offer advice.

I always approach the jump on my left edges while doing a slight carve. I prefer to keep my skis very close together while going off the jump (which takes practice) so all I have to do is pop, twist my hips to the left, and jerk my arms to the right a little bit to keep my balance.

Yeah the office chair is a good analogy. Pretend like you are trying to twist an office chair around without touching the floor.

Don't do anything to prepare for the trick when you are heading up the jump when you are trying to learn them. For a shifty you can just take off straight and then twist and it will basically force your body to stay aligned. I always try to pretend that I am pushing my heels out to one side rather than twisting my toes but idk if that helps in any way.

On the lift turn your legs sideways. Boom you just did a shifty

I feel like its in the ankles, and it might help to imagine that you are simply moving your tails left, or your tips right. Might not make sense, but it worked for me.

Focus on twisting upper body opposite to the direction which you twist your hips
