Honda. My TSX has 320k miles on it, I've had it since 110k with aftermarket parts and tune (rev limiter raised so you can shift deep into the redline) and just replaced two clutches and an AC condensor, and a few sets of tires. Insanely cheap and reliable car.
An older Toyota if you're into that, the older engines just keep running (as far as I'm aware) for a long time. I'd recommend late 90's cus they won't be so old that you're replacing wiring/vacuum lines or small stuff. Small shit adds up when it's replaced or done in a shop and eats up your time if you do it yourself. 4Runners keep going and going, same with Tacomas and the first gens of those go back to 98? Lower insurance on an older vehicle. My mom has a 2005 Sequoia and it has like 210,000mi on it and as far as I know, it's never needed any major repairs. Having had an old 4Runner I think Toyotas are pretty reliable IMO.
Others I guess would be Honda Civics, I've heard those are really hard to destroy and they keep running through a lot. Maybe an older Subaru Outback but you'll have to watch out for head gaskets in the 90's models which is an entire engine pull to fix cus of the boxer style. Imprezas are good too, there's a couple more from other brands obviously, Ford, Chevy, Jeep...
Hopefully you'll find what you're into and what you can afford to keep and maintain!
VWs are pretty durable according to my neighboor, who has had a 90s Jetta running smooth since high school. He's has the same 3 Volkswagen cars for nearly a decade now, and he swears by them! I got a 09 Jetta myself for 5k, with all the bells and whistles and the thing is pretty luxurious and hasn't given me any problems what so ever
i got a 02 volvo xc 70 with 100k miles for $4k cad. Reliable, nice in side, turbo 5 cyl, awd, 8.5 inches ground clearance, and probably the most cargo space you can get in a car thats not an suv. arguably better than a subaru or audi in the snow, really the perfect skiers car.
if only we could get all the volvos they sell in europe though. no option for manual trans is my biggest complaint. over there you can get a volvo with manual trans, limited slip diff, and a more powerful engine. some of them could actually make for a pretty fun tuner car.
I have beaten the piss out of mine and am honestly amazed at how far these cars can go. I have even taken it "mudding"
Regardless, Toyota's reputation is build on these two cars so if you have little cash and a ways to go these would be my choices.
My 2008 honda accord has 153,000 and runs like a dream. Just had to replace a part because I run into tons of potholes (east coast problems). Other than that it has been great.
