MinggI went to college because I didn't have any other choice (thanks mom and dad).

I'm in my third year and even though I really enjoy school, I know if I were to have taken a year or semester off I would have never gone back. If you have some direction in your life and are somewhat confident in what you want to do/where you want to go, I say just go to college.

You said you want to take a year off to work and ski. You can still do those things in college(: Unless you mean like going 110% in both, then maybe you can't haha. You can take advantage of the longer breaks/shorter semesters than high school to do your own thing. I work 10-15 hours per week and still get about 60-70 days per season, so if you're worried about that, it's doable!

dkirseAfter I graduated high school, I backpacked through Europe with my twin brother. Then I spent the rest of the year at a non-academic boarding school in Norway, where my "major" was skiing and we went on trips to Austria, Spain, England...it was a killer year.

Some people look down on gap years (and those are the people that think there's a set path from the moment you enter kindergarten til the day you die) but if there's any advice I can give to someone, it's take time to travel. Learn about yourself, do things you wouldn't normally do, eat all different kinds of food, talk to strangers, write, read, look around, discover, and be thankful.

Learning these things helped me prepare for college. Don't go somewhere or do something just because someone is telling you to, be in control of your own life. Do your own thang.

powderdrunkieI went right into construction and have been doing it ever since. I build things with my hands. I live at my home mountain and I get time off whenever I want. No kids. Just a wife and a dog. Nailed it.

I took a year off and got a few different jobs in different fields. Worked as an electician, worked for a mortgage lender, and worked as a street team member for a concert producer.

I found out what I didn't like, what I could tolerate, and what I liked. Went back to school the next Fall and graduated.

Best decision I could have made.

Do you work all year round or follow the traditional work hard in the summer and collect unemployment during the winter? Or do you make enough for the whole year just during the summer?

I went to college in Bozeman and for a year I even went to class.

No but for real if you pick a college with a great location you will have an awesome time. And it's easy to plan to ski 2-4 days a week at least in college. I ended up taking 2 years off after 3 semesters but i am re enrolling next fall and I am happy with my choice. I have most all pre reqs out of the way and am very motivated to go back because I have already experienced class and I am motivated to study biology. Also know how bad it sucks to work a shitty kitchen job and be broke but ride 5 days a week and I am very tired of it.

Go to college, work, ski, graduate. Then take a year off of life travel, ski, take odd jobs. Then start your life. Youll be older and appreciate the experience more.

The.FishThat's probably because you went into one of the hardest chemical engineering programs in the country at OSU which has tons of competition.

californiagrownLol, the curriculum is the same at Harvard or Chico state. One might have a little more emphasis on theory or application, but the material is basically the same. Post grad is where the school you go to makes a big difference.

I will breeze by in community college calc but will struggle at the university. There is a reason that certain schools require higher average test scores than others. If i went to OSU with a 24 act i will probably fail out but if I went to something like Cleveland State university or something small then I will probably succeed. You may have the same standards but one program is definitely harder than the other.

And the reason schools require different grades/test scores is they want the best and the brightest so they can maintain or improve their reputation as their alumni become successful. Harvard isn't that much better than Cleveland state at preparing students for success... It just only accepts students who are hugely predisposed for success. See what I'm saying?

I took summer classes at a CC and Stanford, and went to Washington state for my undergrad. It's the same shit being taught. Same assignments. Same grading. Hell, Stanford even used the same calc book as I used at WSU so I didn't have to buy it again.

Being a HS senior is fun, but it is getting more and more stressful as graduation approaches. I got accepted to some schools, but I'm just not feeling ready.
