How do I keep my phone from dying in the cold?

I've tried the old " zip lock bag and hand-warmer trick" but my iphone 5s is still dying quickly in even somewhat cold temps. Any tips?

Replace the battery and don't charge the new battery overnight. Overcharging cycles kill batteries so if you only charge to 100 then unplug as soon as you can, the battery will last longer with regular use and will also survive the cold better.

I know there are heated cases and insulated cases but I haven't personally tried them. The phone usually just shuts off due to the cold to because it's a lot harder for the phone to run in the cold my android does this too. I would just suggest to keep it off till you absolutely need it when you're out in the cold.

Handwarmers and or them battery packs.

If you have a couple you can swap them out. If you have a place to charge just rotate them and youre golden

I put it in an inside pocket and always make sure I'm toasty. Or if your snow pants have like insulated pockets, Use that, it's worked great for me. I used to have the same problem, you just gotta see what works for you!

Buy a portable battery pack that holds 2x the capacity of your phone battery.

so just rep one of these in your coat pocket and plug it into your phone. This basically triples the battery life of your iphone. Heat also plays a role in battery life so keeping your stuff in an interior pocket helps too.

With this you should be set for a few days even if your battery has been fried by a shitty charger.

Seeing as you have a phone that is 4 years old, the battery is probably worn out and the 5's didnt have great batteries to begin with.

My iphone 6s plus loses about 20-30% at the most skiing on the coldest days, about the same as a warm day too. The newer phones have larger batteries, lower usage components, etc.

I think your best solution is to run it on power save mode, bring an external battery or get a Mophie Juice Pack case to give you some extra battery life. Keeping it warm will help too, but you can only do so much without a hand warmer.

I use mine to film sometimes. Get a flimsy silicone case. Put a hand warmer in the case and then put it on your phone so it keeps the battery warm. Throw another hand warmer in your pocket with a battery bank

Wear pants under your snow pants like sweats, put them in the pocket of those pants. Also to heat your phone up after it died waste band it. It may sting for the first minute

Put it in your most inside layer. This means its a bitch to reach when you are skiing. Jacket breast pockets are the best and better than pants pockets or anything on your sides where it can break on a fall. I've broken 2 good smart phones falling when hucking cliffs or big features.

Hearing that fucking thing ring while you are ripping powder is the worst feeling in the world. McNoche had the right idea with leave it in the car if you are inbounds and don't plan on meeting up with someone on the hill mid day.

I just upgraded from a 5s. The battery lasted 6 hours from how old it is. So that just might be your issue.

Using a case help, and put it in your innermost layer. You might have to take the case off and warm it up with your hand/skin contact to get the battery juices flowing to turn on .

Stick it in a sock and put that in your inside breast pocket. Seems to do the trick for me. Whenever I don't do this, my phone 100% dies.

But for real though if you wear compression shorts there is usually a pocket meant for putting a cup in, to protect your nuts.

Ive used this pocket to sneak alcohol into sporting events, if it fits a flask, I bet it will fit a phone.

The other ironic thing is your balls are actually cooler than the rest of your body. For sneaking in alcohol that idea seems great and I may end up using it but having your phone in there nowadays would be super uncomfortable.

Honestly not trying to hate on Apple or fanboy Samsung because I dgaf, but I never really had much issue with my phone dying on the hill with either of my samsungs. My friends with Iphones would always die when it was cold, but mine would usually last till I left. In general Samsung uses bigger batteries than Apple, but idk what specifically makes them do better in the cold but they definitely do from my experience.

If you put tinfoil around it then stick it in the microwave for 0:07 it will heat up for the day and actually charge it. The tinfoil acts as a conductor for the rest of the day.

If that's something you want to be prepared for get one of those shitty flip phones for your pack. Battery lasts for like 5 days on those things.
