i agree, but snoqualmie seems to only check skiers passes, they let snowboarders go right through all the time. rather have a few jerrys than snowboarders ruining the snow and the jumps

Brighton has a park pass for the upper section where there are jumps, realistically park city should have one but most mountains don't wanna deal with the hastle and extra employees, etc.

Overall i like the idea tho, keeps the gapers/non park skiers out of danger and teaches uneducated park riders about safety.

i mean, i agree, but theyre a pain in the ass when you go to a mountain you don't frequent. im the best skier on the planet and i cant enter the park without wasting more time and money on some stupid video?

yeah i know gapers are a legitimate safety concern at some places but it's just so annoying

okay here's a compromise: there's a safety video and fee but you can skip those if you hit the jump over a spike pit at the top of the park? trial by fire! patent pending

park passes dont stop gapers, my home mountain wachusett has had them for a decade and the gapers just buy them and get in the way anyways. Theoretically the park crew could just kick them out when they do this but 90% of the time they'll never get caught and even when they do there will be more gapers the next day

Stratton and jiminy peak require it. Jiminy peak charges, which is stupid but it helps keep people out who shouldnt be there who dont want to spend the money for their kid and them to go in there.

my home mountain did it for a season and all the jerrys just got them anyway. was a huge waste of time

I was riding Snoqualmie s park the other night and I figured once he had seen my pass like 6 times I could just ride through. Nope. They are very thorough with their checking. When I used to know people on park crew they didn't give a shit. I think that's the difference.

Creek had them. I feel like it didn't do anything, or they didn't check them/enforce anything. Honestly, I think it could have made it worse because gapers thought of it as a status symbol in the same way they think it's fun just riding through the park near the features and calling that skiing park.

I ski snoqualmie too and I just duck the fence on the side, I think it's bukkshit they require park passes. None of their jumps or features are even big compared to Stevens

Both of these issues aren't problems during the midweek, but it's something that should be enforced on weekends and holidays. Then again, it's Mount Jore, and nobody gives a fuck about the park there.

i ski every friday and saturday there. if i show them my park pass twice on friday they wont check mine for the rest of the weekend

there is no way to keep people who dont now what theyre doing out of the park, i guess we just have to always be aware and enjoy what we can. its annoying but dont let it ruin your day.

My mountain doesn't. Feel like a jerry trap, like a jump or rail into the park would be more effective at keeping Jerrys out tho.

I wish my mountain did this- or at least wish they did for the dedicated poma so it wouldn't stop and get derailed all the time.

If you look at the old videos from 06-08 I used to fence off the sides of the knuckles from the take off to keep people from standing on them. Huge problem there. Unfortunately they've promoted it though. Even had a photo pf the day 2 or 3 years ago of some girl in pink wedging off the side of a rail take off saying "Check out our wicked terrain park" or something.

But pretty much your last sentence. Whiteface cares a bunch now it seems. Worth going there when you have the time.

Always been torn on the issue.

It really depends on the place, and the strategy of enforcement.

Now with social media people have less of a chance of not knowing that a place has park passes. (So long as they tell people) That was an issue at one point. You show up to shred for 3 or 4 hours and find out you have to figure out where to get a park pass and pay more, wait for a while instead of riding.

I remember Okemo ran a park pass the only time I was there in 08/09. I didn't even know about it till after. I think the guys at the gate just stopped people who didn't look like they knew what they were doing or families/kids.

Maybe there's a more one size fits all situation with more research but at the moment it seems pretty tough.

I think the biggest things that mountains absolutely NEED is beginner options leading up to their more advanced parks. Gone are the 90s and early 2000s. Most places have incorporated this to an extent, some do an excellent job, but more could get on board.

Putting parks that are fun for everybody parallel to parks that are higher difficulty is always a good option.

The worst way it can be done is beginner feeding into advanced which I've seen at gore and other parks. Problem there is the people who ride the first park, will almost always go into the second, unless mom says no.

Mt snow did good on this. Sure there are 4 park trails wide of options so it spreads things out but still significant in my opinion. Nitro under the quad would be a shit show on busy weekends. Park was built for beginner ish to fun enough for advanced. Even some of the best riders lap it regularly.

The gulch, medium/large- large. More carry over but still much more quite.

Inferno. Fucking ghost town. Even the few tourists who wants to ride over the "Big mounds" never seemed to stack up.

Obviously building a million parks side by side isn't realistic for everyone, but having a 2 trail option side by side is a great way to keep people off of your bigger features.

Also when you see people in the parks that shouldn't be there. Instead of baring people from the park, it's nice to have the option of telling them to go through the other park instead.

There are always idiots, and jerry, joey and family are who they are, but it helps.

The more mountains that invest in their beginner options the better. Obviously I wouldn't expect programs that are high level to dedicate 1 mile plus trail to complete noobs, but you do see some of the biggest places throwing down some real estate to small/medium features. Also many of these mountains have an almost dedicated noob zone.

As far as park passes. I wish they would put that into a guest services kind of position. The thought of losing guys that could be working to sit at the top of the park all day and check passes seems like a waste. Unless some of the guys don't shovel or rake in which case you should find some new guys anyway.

I think passes for the black parks are an extremely good idea. I used to work at a place which implemented them, and injuries went down substantially the moment they came into play. As did gapers on the landings, jumping off the sides of rails, etc. It also gave the mountain a way to quantify how many people were using the park, which actually ended up impressing the execs so we got more budget to put towards things.

Beginner parks should be easy to get into, well maintained and separate from the big stuff. However I'm a firm believer that as annoying as a park pass is... it brings so much positive to the advanced features its well worth it.
