SLC to Jackson Hole & Airline Ski Bag Allowances

Heading over from NZ in late Jan, what's the best way to get from SLC to Jackson Hole - hire a car, or are there some ok bus connections? The only bus I've been able to find was $150pp, so kinda makes more sense to get a car, but don't really need a car once we're there..
Also, any advice with ski bags on AA or Delta? I've got a double bag and will have my wife's and my own skis in the one bag. Both sites say one pair of skis count as one item of luggage and customer service just refers me back to that section of the website.. are they likely to check, or will we be ok as long as we're under the weight and size dimensions?

ski bags are just another piece of luggage unless they are past the dimensions, which i cant imagine would happen. So just the price of another bag m8

Yeah, I'd say take the buss, driving's a hassle and chances are the roads will be terrible.
They only care about the number of bags and the weight, so if you're able to pull it off with only one bag, awesome!
Have fun, it's gonna be good out here in Jan!

I flew into SLC in March, rented a truck with 2 friends through Enterprise, and drove up to Jackson Hole from there. Roads weren't great but were manageable. Took us about 4.5 to 5 hours to get there if I remember correctly. It worked out for us, but I could easily see ID-34 and US-89 getting NASTY because in some parts you're on a 2 lane road going through a narrow pass. It's also been dumping there this season so far.
If you can get a rental for your time there that is cheaper than the bus, I would go that route, just remember that 4WD is an absolute MUST! Otherwise take the bus and relax.
All times are Eastern (-5)
