When is it too cold to ski

whats the lowest temp u guys will ski, like is skiing -30 all day worth it? yes, but i wanna know what u think.

The windchill factor is what does it for me. I'll ski in -20 on a nice calm day no problem. But if the winds are high it makes it miserable & I usually call it if there's not a sheltered side of the mountain.

Wind is the worst.

It could be -40 without wind and I would ski.
Anything below -2 with wind, I don't fuck with that.

I just went out to set up a feature earlier tonight and with windchill I think its like -20 degrees, but not enough snow. I stop when my feet are going to be damaged from the cold really since I can layer up any other part of my body.

the coldest day I have ever skied was at Mad River Glen last year in February. they had to cancel the ski races that were planned that day because the temperature at just the base was -50 because of wind chill. i couldn't take more two runs without taking a break to warm up to avoid getting frostbite, and it's not like i had cheap, crappy equipment. i was wearing a pair of really nice Hestra gloves.

9pm night skiing in Ruka last season got to -42. Needless to say we didn't last too long. Ok whilst moving but deathly on the lift.

one day last season i was out on a day where it was -36 C + a lot of wind. Only did it cause i got a free pass for that day. did a run, went back up, stopped in the hut to warm up, skied back down and left

this. wind just kills it for me. I was skiing at timberline last winter and it was just horribly windy and they had to shut down the chairlifts because they were all rocking back and forth. made for a sucky day of skiing.

instructing skiing last year and it was like .... -40 without the wind chill. It was windy in the morn and that was death. But the wind died as the day went on and i can honestly say -40 is much more pleasant then a windy asf -20 day. But my hill always gets a wind and theres 0 shelter so :( atleast on the chairlift its to our backs so its decent.

Wind chill kills skiing... it gets in ur knooks and crannnies and makes for no fun :(

Usually if every landing hurts from my feet being partially frozen and toe bang. Its like 14 at home so probably 11 at the hill so I still might go. Wind is worse than cold for me though, wind is a fucker.

Yeah I mean I'm in NH so it's just starting to get freezing all the time, rain froze over last night after like 4 inches of fluffy pow. I can ski in the cold but it's gonna just be ass conditions today

when i was 15 ish i was out at night for fun multiple days at -25. Not really windy though.

For work I've been out where it was -65 wind chill at one peak and under 70 at the summit.This was day time. I got frostbite in about 45 second of leaving the gondola. Opened the parks and then sat by the fire in the mid station. Nobody was skiing.

doesn't get too cold at my mountain, but it does rain. back in December it rained really heavily and water was pooling on me during the chairlift, and my boots were soaked, way worse then -5 with 30 mile an hour gusts. I got to buy a plastic rain roncho for next time

Honestly people are talking about how they'd ski -30 and shit, and it's easy to say that until you actually do it. That's fucking cold and idc how good you're gear is or how tough you are. Thats hard to ski in for anyone. Exposed skin will get frostbite in the matter of minutes, not even worth skiing if you're risking frostbie that bad. Doable? Yes. Enjoyable? Not really.

Yeah I'm going to agree here, I draw the line at about -25. I did one day of -30 with wind chill at Sunshine a few years ago and never again. It was hot garbage sitting on the lift, I'd rather just have a rest day and not risk frostbite. My mum got it in europe once and I'm going to do my best to never have to deal with that. Unless its a super rad day you'd have to work hard to convince me to put in a full day at even -20.

Had several days working park crew that were -40 to -70 with windchill in December, at that point it just sucks because you can’t cover your nose without goggles fogging up

For a few days straight in december i skied -25 with about -10 of windchill on top, no base layers just a sweater coat and t-shirt and I was fine for the most part

2. moister on the rails usually doesn't dry up

long story short came home for chirstmas skied -38 degrees all by myself best day of my season

Just to have to want it that bad to ride in cold weather.

I still remember the long, cold, nights at Blue Mountain; practicing tricks on massive features in -26C and noticeable winds. Or waiting in contests for your turn in an east coast blizzard at night. At the end of the night, your socks are frozen in your ski boots because its so cold. Back then, I was at school full time so I needed to ski to relax. It was tough, but didnt seem so bad...

Good gear is the solution to all weather condition, no matter how cold it gets.
