Skiing the the Bay Area

Hey NS,

I'm a college student from Boston, but I'll be spending the spring semester in San Francisco!

I bought the Mountain Collective Pass and will be spending my spring break in Utah to ski Park City and Alta.

While in SF I plan to use my pass to ski at Squaw and Mammoth. I was wondering if there were any people in the area who knew the best ways to get to these mountains (I will not have a car) and how to best spend my time there.

I know there's a bus that runs day trips to Squaw for $60 so I'll probably take advantage of that. But I'm not so sure how easy it will be for me to make it to Mammoth as I believe it is about 6 hours away by car.

Let me know if you have any advice on getting the best out of skiing in California and I'd love to get to ski with some people in the area who know their way around the best local spots.

I don't know the distance for mammoth but I believe squaw is right around 3 hours drive. I'll be moving out to tahoe this week. I no a few people that live in SF that will be coming up on occasion. I guess it's not too bad of a trek.

I'll be mostly rocking the VR mountains but going to hit squaw a few times.

Your best bet is going to Tahoe. I don't remember the name of the pass, but there's basically a route to Mammoth that you can take that is more direct but is inaccessible during winter causing you to take a long-ass trip to get there.

Hop the Bart to the Amtrak up to Sac and I'm usually headed up to Squaw most weekends for the day. Not sure it will be cheaper than $60 all the way to the mountain though, tbh. Look into it

The drive from Bay to Tahoe is 3 hours ideally, to 6+ hours. It's taken me 3 hrs to get back to Sac from Tahoe during heavy snow periods. It's also taken me 3 hrs to get from Sac to the Bay. Puttin two and two together here, although I've never done the full Tahoe to Bay drive myself
