do not say anythign bad about candide, ever

he is the perfect rider in every way: he defines progression

pipe: redefined it in 03

park: always has dominated it, anone remember that hip jump he took straight on??? i woudl love for him to have input designing superpark

rails: 810

going big: every thing he has ever done



he pushes the envolope all the time, and frequently too far as evidenced by he frequent injuries, no one else pushed themselves as hard at the x games...

remember when tanner came down after his second run and said he guessed that he'd have to boost a little higher??? he realized his amplitude wasn't enough and so he should've put it all on the line and booosted as high as he could out of the pipe. he already had a lock on second, why not put it all on the line for first?? instead he decided to try to add a little more tech into his already super-tech run.

progression is what its all about, and it just pisses me off that tanner didnt step it up. how sweet could tanner be if he decided to go as high as candide/dumont???

'stepping it up' and doing somethign amazing is what our sport is all about.

to those of you that say tanner got robbed by the dumont...woudl you rather see comps going in the direction of hucked-yet-stylie big spins with small height or huge height with sweet tricks?

i heard a rumor that sprong learned sw 10's AT the open...thats what its all about

First, the three top people who have been robbed at the X-games are, in order:

1) Candide Thovex
2) Phil Belanger
3) Jon Olsson

Sorry Jon gets bronze on that too, but thats irony...


Now, for my take on Candide:

Candide Slays. Seriously.
-X-games at 16 years old.
-D-spin at Chads Gap.
-110 foot Oakley Hip at Superpark.
-50 foot cliff step up.
-Corked 810 to rail (not particularily cool in my opinion, but incredible considering his injuries last season).
-20 foot airs in the halfpipe all through 2003.


And for those who complain about his style, lets see you take a fucking 110 foot hip head on and rotate a flair with steeze. Candide can do whatever the fuck he wants to, hes a deity. He doesnt have to look 'stylie', he just is. Seriously, if he spent time in North America and attended the huge scene we have over here, you would hear nothing but news about Candide, but he's mysterious and reclusive, like the Asian Sun Bear.

If anyone wants to doubt him, go watch his ski movie segments from the last 5 years.

Can'dweed!! Yea word to that ^. From what I understand and have read about Thovex is that he just doesn't care about all the hyype. Instead he goes out into some secret ski spot in Europe and just sessions it. He is the same age as me, i think, im 21, but i just got mad respect for all that he had done already.
You don't need to even question any part of his skiing. He has proven himself probably before alot of you even started skiing over in Europe.

the one thing people comment on are his lack of diverse grabs, and his tweakage. they may have a point as far as his lack of different grabs in my eyes, but still, i think candide has flow like no other.

How the fuck are safetys not nessecarily the steeziest grab. Ahhhh......... he never said they were he said they could be if done right which is most definitely true and please you are rediculous. how the FUCK can you tell me that candide hucks less than tanner? If you can honestly tell me that candides cork 7s are smoother than tanners not even stylier, not bigger, not nothing, just SMOOTHER then you can be entitled to your rediculous opinion I guess. And to all you people that keep mentioning what he does and saying he doesn thave to be stylie. candide's dspin at chads. you be the judge. personally, it wasnt noticably unstylie, nor super hucked. but it wasnt the smoothest thing ever. it isnt something you'd base an argument on, though.

Mike i understand a little where you're comming from but not really. Who the FUCK else can do a cork 810 to a rail? who can do it with style No one else but candide. If progressive moves have to be done with style then fuck progressing lets do stylie 5's all the time and do (perfectly done) gay ass safty grabs you can have all the style in the world and not even touch candide he's my hero and who ever said he's skiing on the same level props to you.

CANDIDE IS THE FUCKING BEST he could beat tanners little punck ass down in any type of skiing.

mmm no, all I said was that candide cant be the sickest skier period because he has no style and I never said he wasnt a huge progressor. I also just said that people tend to overlook his lack of style because his tricks are so sick. I never said a trick needs style to be sick. It just cant be THE SICKEST without style. Style is the most important thing.

Some of you people need to reflect upon your definitions of style. What is style to you? Because I think a corked 810 to rail is styly in itself, no matter how you put it. Everybody loves the Dumont, and he has pretty ugly style. Look at his poles when he hits anything huge. They flail all over the place. I don't understand some of you people.

810 to rail was not stylish, however...
Style is not just being compact and smooth. Style is something that is unique to that rider and when you see that particular style, you recognize it as that skier.

Think of artists, if everyone just followed the same definition of what style was, then everythin would be the same

Yes, Candide does a lot od tweaked true tail grabs and flails a lot but that is his PERSONAL style and will never be emulated by anyone else. That is why he is regarded as one of the most stylish skier ever cuz he is unique

style=being unique and your own thing.

Watch french toast, CT does cork 3 true tails better than anyone. trust me.

Candide does sick mutes too.

Candide flails on 120 footers but so does anyone else, but on normal jumps its a different story

Candide NOT PROGRESSIVE??? what the f.. Are you kids aware that Candide did the D-spin over Chads Gap while your little redhead bitch Tanner Hall watched and refused to even try straight jumping it.

Talking about girls and style, Jon Olsson has waaayyy smoother landings and less jerky takeoffs than Mrs. T. Hall. Of the 2 Tanners, Mr. Rainville is way smoother, without trying to go back to the stoneage..

lax, sloppy on the style?? With all the best 'free'skiers in the world watching him in awe, he did (maybe a double-grab) and landed fakie on a jump that noone else had the balls to clear!!

wow, just reading this pisses me off. to say candide doesnt have style is to say pollard doesnt have style. or that boronowski doesnt have style because he tends to do a very few grabs. they dont use a wide variety of grabs, but thats cool! it truely makes them distinct. candide will grab the bluntest blunt tail, or the most pretty reverse mute, and throw the biggest air and stomp the shit out of it. and what is this talk of all this flailing? he does flail occasionally, but we're talking on huge ass shit, i.e. 20ft pipe hits 2 years ago, and that superpark hit at mammoth-i dont know, i dont think jumps ever get bigger than that in a park, even if it is a photoshoot. that bullshit about the 'spread eagle' before he landed that cork 5 on that monster is infuriating. not only was nobody else clearing it, he was throwing a very smooth cork 5 with a beautiful tail. and to say his cork 810 had no style is blasphemy. he didnt even flail like some of you claim. and prior to that, he threw, what i would consider, the sickest 450 on, from what ive seen. at least he has set a path for a skiers to follow, probably in a couple of years though, and continues to do so. some of his backcountry hits are unreal, just grabbing like a fiend. watch video from the candide invitationals, the man oozes style. candide is certainly one of the best and most stylie skiers on the planet, his innovation is style, he has distinct style, and it certainly is just that, style

Innovation = style, i like it grant. Seriously, just watch the pipe run from two years back and say his skiing doesnt have style. Its not gorilla steeze or anything, but its more perfect and refined, with clear movements that dont mask the technicality or the trick.

Its cause he doesnt flow into his grabs, he pole plants, then crosses his skis and sticks his hand there in such a nasty, not flowing way. Then comes out once again in this disgusting way and then its just all hideous... ANd you cantttttt tell me that simon isnt stylie after watching one of his recent segments... We arent talking about some crazy definiteion of style youve made up. We are talking about standards... candide needs to relax in the air.

just because you don't like someones style doesn't mean they don't have it. Style can't be quantified. why do you think at every judged event in any sport there are disputes and little shits on the internet saying athlete X got robbed cause his style was sooooo much better than athlete Y's. WHile style is important it is not the ultimate everyone makes it out to be. If style was all that mattered we would all be dressed in the newest oakley gear standing in the park looking amazing. we would never do anything. there needs to be a technical aspect to it.

Candides 810 to rail was technically perfect. anything less and he would have been in the hospital. IF anyone else attempted it I have very little doubt it would have looked much worse, and been done with less style. mikee doesn't like candide's style, ok, he is entitled to that. Style is exactly that how it looks. and different people like different asthetics. dumonts step up 180 with virtually no body movement was freaken sick, but I personally don't like his hunched over style. does he have style? YES. it oozes out of him, just like candide, or pollard. yoiu may not like it, but it is there.

Are you kidding me? You cant tell me that candide could do a butter to unnaty urban rail as smoothly as tanner did in wski. Im not even ragging on candide really, I said he was sick, and I respect him as an anthlete and a progressor of the sport. You are telling me Tanner skis like a girl compared to candide. Im glad your opinion was backed up with facts and Im glad that your opinion versus mine warrants you saying I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Second of all, I forgot yoru name whoever wrote that I was beign hypocritical in what I said about a definition of style. I think style can indeed be defined. Like a standard for style is that your arms and legs shoudl look controlled and not flailing, as well as landings shoudl be stomped in a way that makes it look solid and smooth and maybe even effortless. Stuff like that is what I think makes up the standards of style, looking in control and solid and smooth and not pushing for everything. Looking effortless is what I think of style as. However, if you think looking liek youa re trying as hard as possible and charging liek a madman flailing all over the place and sticking teh trick with aggression is sick, then I guess have fun liking candide. Im not trying to insult anyone, I just dont think Candide has what I would consider standards of good style.

i dont agree with the first guy....i think that hits in the pipe between 10 or 15 feet out with super sick and tech tricks beat smaller tricks 15-20feet out....more hits in a pipe is better. more linkage. thats what pipe is all about

mickee, it was i who said that you were being hypocritical, and again: you said that you need to look effortless and stomp stuff; well unless you are blind, you cannot tell me that candide doesn't do just that when he skies, you need to watch the rastafarides for proof: everything (except maybe 2 jumps in the whole first three movies) is smooth, tweaked, stomped and technical, everything, absolutely everything.
now, that we diverge in our appreciations for style, thats a given, but to say that candide doesn't have style is untrue: just the fact that alot of us think so is proof of that; just because you don't like his style, like someone said up there, doesn't mean he doesn't have style, fact is he has googles of it, as does most every other rider mentioned in this thread: i don't especially like watching tanner hall ski, but he has mad style in his tricks.
accept the fact that some if not most of us have diverging opinions on candides style, that we either don't like it or love it, but he does have style, and its his own. love it or leave it, don't bash it...

candide is the classic, huck it with no style, he style is straight up, he looks like a 50 year old guy that is for some reason is good at skiing.

bristol you seriously dont want to see guys go bigger in the pipe? clearly where pipe is goign is huge air and switch hits, the judges have to reward the huge hits until skiiers can combine smooth tech tricks with height
