cultural appropriation isn't just taking something from a certain culture.It's taking an aspect of their culture (head dresses for example) and ignoring all of the problems within their culture whilst benefiting from said culture. For example, a school in kentucky (1) banned black hairstyles. All while Kylie Jenner is being praised as a fashion icon for having cornrows. Meanwhile, a white rapper like macklemore isn't nearly as slammed (I can think of like two rappers that have slammed macklemore) for "cultural appropriation". Why?? Because Macklemore isn't just benefiting from being a white rapper, and ignoring the issues in the black community. He's actively trying to make a change and educate people. (2) That's why no one gives a shit when black people take from "white culture" because white people don't have any systematic problems.

Look at this fucking website, there is a lot of people complaining about the olympics and how freeskiing will die out and lose it's soul because of the olympics. That more people will become freeskiers because they thinks "it's cool". There was people complaining about that. You have surfers complaining surfing is getting too big and it's losing it's culture. People don't like it when what they believe in and create is taken by people for popularity or other reasons. Hipsters are a perfect example. Fucking music and how pedantic people are over underground bands. Now imagine, you're in a society which looks down on you because you embrace your culture, only to have a white person do the exact same thing and be praised for it? You are so confused as to why you are angry. Your example is theft. The black hair style example is irony. Other people's examples are just being assholes.

The real question here is why did the op think his robe was a great costume? Because it's comfortable, because it is a great way to dress a someone else or because he thought it was funny? Then the question is why is it funny to dress as a muslim? This is 'racism'. You could call it cultural appropriation but why would you? It's just 'racist'.

To be clear, cultural appropriation is just using things from another culture, or appropriating them. Cultural mis-appropriation is using things from another culture in a disrespectful way. Borrow anything you want from any culture, just beware when you use it disrespectfully. This thought process should be the same if it is your own culture. People always point out the skanky festival native head dress because the head dress is a culturally significant piece and they feel it is being disrespected because the wearer is not acknowledging the significance. Do you think natives should feel offended if they see that?

To me, it is about the intent and respect of the user.
