I'm thinking about buying a 7d2?

I have one, yai. Good camera to me, haven't felt limited but again I use it probably 20/80 photo/video for ski stuff, more like 90/10 photo/video for non ski. I've never used FF so couldn't really comment on dropping back to APSC. Burst is wicked nice. I can PM you some sample stuff if you want. If you've got any other questions, ask away. yo sklar ive also got the 7d2.

used almost exclusively for concert photos and landscapes. occasional b-roll for video but ive got a gh4 for that.

i really enjoy it and think you would too

Gavin's 7d2 RAW files had way more room to play with in LR than the 5D2's, thats a positive sign.
I think it would be a good move, I'll just have to figure out how to pay for it.

I absolutely love this camera.

The frame rate is ridiculous @ 10 fps.

The AF settings are ridiculous.

I've never owned a FF body either, so I don't know what that kind of difference will be, but I have been very happy with the IQ.

I don't think I have a single complaint off of the top of my head.

The 5d2 is an 8 year old camera, so i'm starting to think the IQ difference will actually be minimal.

The image quality will be negligible in difference honestly. You're using ff lens on an apsc you have to remember how large the pixels on the 5d2 are in comparison to the pixel density on The apsc sensor some of your lens' will actually resolve better than on your 5d2. If I stuck with canon it would be the 7dii for sure as my choice. But I went Sony mirror less and haven't looked back once. I shot with a friends 7d for shits and giggles one weekend and was so pissed off with the lack of functions lack of quality and lack of creative control through it. I'll say time and time again Sony is the way to go but if I had a second choice it'd be 7dmk2.

^I'm on the Sony train also. Spent some time on an A7R the past few months as a B/Photo cam and I've been so impressed. Going back to a Canon body is very disappointing in comparison.

Check one out if you have the chance. I've been using a mix of Sony and adapted Canon glass and I've been happy all around.

Keep in mind that Sklar is mostly a photography guy, and transitioning from Canon to Sony for photo is not the same as it is for video. Doing the transition in video you can just buy an adapter and use old Canon lenses, but it doesn't work like that for photo because the adapter reduces photo quality far more than video and it disables functionalities like AF. In other words, to switch from Canon to Sony for photo, the only route is really to completely rebuild a kit with Sony-compatible lenses. That's far less cost effective as just getting a new Canon, and IMO the 7d2 is an exceptional action photography camera, I don't see it being surpassed by Sony's cameras in the same price range.

I'm going to try and get a 7d2, if I can afford it before my trip to Japan.

It just falls very naturally into my existing kit, which is a major plus. I don't have the time or money to go through and replace everything from glass to flash triggers. It's taken me a long time to get what I have together at my very limited budget.

Very very true I was lucky enough to not be heavily invested at the time of switching, but honestly I rented a 7d2 and I hated the video quality and image quality in comparison to an a6000 sub $600 camera and a6500 now for 1300 or so is a big step up too. But I do miss the feel of a Canon haha

I've shot my 7D2 for around two years now (professionally for photo and video), and have never been disappointed with IQ.

Autofocus paired with a good lens is phenomenal. Shutter speed works wonders for action stuff.

The only time you'd notice a different in bokeh/ IQ/ richness is if you're comparing a shot from the 7D2 against a newer FF camera.

You probably already have some L-series gear for the 5D2 (which will no doubt produce good results on an APSC sensor), but you should consider buying some crop lenses if you do invest in the 7D2. I have the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 (best lens I've ever used, produces better results than L-series), and Tokina 11-20 f/2.8. Since these lenses are: 1.) High quality glass 2.) Made for crop sensor they have unbelievable IQ. That being said, I use my Canon 70200 f/2.8L for all tele stuff, which also produces amazing results.
