I love how no poles used to only be cool when there was limited arm flailing and now arm flailing is the trend hahah but Poles for me. I do switch back and forth a good amount though.

The main reason behind not using poles is for park skiers to make their lives easier. If you wipe out with poles your chance of injury or breaking your poles and having to buy new ones is a lot higher. Not only that but if you are learning different grabs with your spins its a lot easier without having poles in the way.

i agree, i used to run poles in the park but i constantly kept snapping them in half so i just stopped, not saying one looks better than the other i just do it cause im a broke college student

I have mad thumb problems and every crash or washout I had with poles fucked them even more so I dropped them and its one of the better decisions Ive ever made in skiing

This. My thumbs are fucked, always still used poles though. Had 2 hand surgeries this summer and headed for a 3rd so I'll have to get used to the no pole life this year. Always thought that poles came in handy for maneuvering the lift line though

My hands, wrists, and fingers are pretty banged up from falling on them without poles so I might use them again this year.

This just isnt true. If you can ski without poles on legit terrsin, or even just sctual skiing, then you sure as hell can do it eith poles.

When i got coached for moguls, i was told to drop poles and ski without them following the same principle i just said above.

I honestly think both look good. It's honestly what kind of style you have. Last Season their were a group of kids skiing with no poles and I thought they honestly looked retarded... But if you can rock no poles like The Bunch then go right ahead. I like how if you have no poles grabs are easier more fun and seem more solid rather than ramming your knuckles into your sidewall because you don't wanna drop your pole in the middle of the air. I also think poles can make a style look better. Like if I saw Tom Wallisch skiing without poles I don't think he would look as styley. It's personal preference. Also hand drags are more fun without poles. In the end just have fun Skiing

Dislocated my left thumb back in march (crashed, and it was right between the pole and my hip bone when I hit the ground). Obviously it would have not happened without poles.

But at the same time, how am I going to pole plant like Candide if I don't use them...

No poles, once I just forgot to bring them with me and I haven't used them since then because usually I hit up park every time I go skiing.

Might start using poles again this season since I'll be doing a few trips that won't have any park happening at all.

no poles

once i dropped the poles a few years ago i don't think i'll go back. grabs are so much easier and you never have to worry about carrying crap with you all the time. also no/less risk of the classic skiers thumb pole-induced injury... it's not like I ever planted them or used them functionally in any way...

after sustaining a handful of injuries with poles it was pretty easy to justify not using them. skier's thumb a few times, bent pole over my thigh, took a pole into the chest, etc... totally avoidable injuries.

I will agree that you have a greater chance of looking like a total gaper without poles though.

IMO you have to have a certain level of skill/style to avoid looking like an idiot without poles. if you don't meet those requirements then you are far more likely to look dumb without poles than if you used them.

I use to, but vietnam flashback 2 years ago--i shoved one into a ladder notch on one of those big ass poles as i was on the chairlift. I thought I was going to get impaled

Also no poles in the park and poles everywhere else. Kind of depends on conditions and resort though.

I am from the midwest. My hill is like 250ft so I basically do zero backcountry and just shred small runs and park so I think no poles would be acceptable.
