muttenchops23Who here has been to Elk mountain in PA? It is super small compared to Vermont, New York, and places out west, but I grew up skiing there. I know the place like the back of my hand and have made some great friends+memories there. I feel like Colorado or Utah would be great fun but also overwhelming for me. Also, night skiing is a big plus.
Minuses would probably be unpredictable snowfall, having the season end early, having the season start late, and small mountain size. Oh and the cops aren't as used to seeing urban skiing, so they can be douchebags about that.
.frenchyI'm talking about late June when its just ice/snow. that's earning your turns, hater.
californiagrownEveryone gets to know their home mountain super well. Thats not exclusive to tiny east coast mountains.
Also, it seems like east coast folks think that the west only consists of mega resorts. I'm guessing cause that is where touristy families visit on rheir once per year vacation?
Also, there is a lot of night skiing out west.
muttenchops23I know, but I'm just saying that is personally why I like east coast.
Elk mountain is the biggest resort in PA u believe, while a mountain the size of Elk in a Utah would be on the smaller side. I'm saying a con of the East Coast is thereally isn't as much vertical.
californiagrownEh, I guess it just sounds like the east has nothing positive that the west does not have more of or better.
But , the question was what is good about the east not better about the east.

californiagrownReally? What major cities are within 1.5 hours of great skiing areas on the east coast? Cause there are 3 major cities like that out west
Yung_JimmySeven Springs is about an hour from Pittsburgh, although it might be the only relevant city in the east close to a good resort. I actually like the fact that I can wake up early morning and drive out to get some laps in and then come back into the city in the evening to catch a Steelers or Penguins game. I wouldn't trade it for anything tbh.
californiagrownIsn't 7 springs super shitty apart from the park? Or am I thinking of another hill in PA?
TNORTS1. you get better at skiing shit fuck conditions, which makes you a better skier overall
2. the vibe (it least in my opinion) is better on the east. Everyone is just stoked to be on skis and stoked to help someone out, show em a spot, etc. Some of the mountains out west have felt like they have some locals only point-break type elitism shit going on.
californiagrownYou're going to the wrong resorts and only during holidays if you are getting a bad vibe from locals out west.
TNORTSYou might be right. Its just that generally, if you're super into skiing in the east, its because you really truly love everything about it. If you're willing to go out in shit fuck conditions, rain, sleet, -30 windchills, and still have a good time, you really love the sport. As a result, the scene is really awesome and feels super "core" to me (whatever the fuck that means, but I'm sure you know what I'm getting at). I haven't gotten that same feeling out west yet, but I'm willing to be proven wrong!
californiagrownIf they were truly that into skiing, they wouldn't be living on the east coast haha
TNORTSThat's bullshit. Plenty of circumstances keep people out here. Life comes first man and it doesn't always have living in the west in the cards for everyone. I imagine you are either young, ignorant of how the world around you works, or both. Not everyone can just drop everything and move across the country
tomatonaterSmaller mountains make it easier to get caught by ski patrol
RparrIt is indeed very hard to out run the ski patrol on 200 feet of vertical
Itsoskar2what is your favorite and least favorite part about the east
freestyler540Pro: 3 resorts in a 4 hr radius
Con: Never heard of any of them
Brule.Pros:
-People always say that if you can ski the east coast, you can ski anywhere, which is true.
tomatonaterPros: Better appreciation for snow. People are generally more friendly and outgoing.
BubbleBuddyso glad i live in denver
brotoThis might be true in regards to snow surface, but in terms of terrain, it is not. Skiing icy hills does not prepare a person for the steep + enormous terrain/exposure/cliffs of the west. At least it didn't in my experience. Took a while to get used to.
brotoThese seem to be the real pros IMO. I can appreciate the snow in the west so much more than people who grew up here. And the "small mountain vibe" is definitely a thing. The skiing communities are much tighter at small mom + pop hills.
