East Coast Transplant - Ogden UT (help)

So, after eight years of dreaming about moving "out west", I finally made it happen. I just moved to the South Ogden/Weber area and need some help. I got a job around the air force base and am thinking about skiing Snowbasin this year to keep it local. Got a pretty good job out here so I'm in the market for a couple pairs of skiis and was just wondering what the good ski shops are around here. I'd like to find something local, but wouldn't mind going down to the SLC area either.

Any help/advice would go a long way. I'm 2000+ miles away from anyone I know, so take it easy on me plz ;]




Disclaimer: I've been lurking here for years and I know I'll probably get the usual "lrn2google" or "USEEE TEH SEARCHHH" responses, but I just wanted to see if some peeps familiar with the area could help me out. Also, if this isn't the right place to post this topic..sry.

Yo dude! Welcome to the 801.

Check out 2nd Tracks on 12th and Harrison. They have lots of good deals on new and used skis.

There is also Alpine Sports on Washington. Not as good of deals, but they have a lot more newer items in stock.


Also, you need to check out Powder Mountain as well. Much less crowded/cheaper than Basin.

I live in Salt Lake, and skied Snowbasin last year. Loved the mountain, and there is a lot of good terrain. Sunday's are not typically very crowded there either.

As for ski shops 2nd tracks is definitely tight, and they actually have a ski swap this weekend I think. That is what I would suggest for getting some good skis at a decent price, and could get you two pairs instead of one for the same price.

Awesome guys, thanks! Those are pretty much the two shops I've found from google searches. Do y'all have a preference between the two when it come to getting bindings mounted? I'll have to come check out that ski swap (thanks for the heads up btw), but I gotta get a pay check or two before I drop some dough on some new sticks. I'll at least come out and drool a lil haha.

Yeah, I've been split on powder mountain vs snowbasin. One reason I've been leaning more towards snowbasin is that it's a 25 min drive vs 45 min. I plan on hitting up both, but will prbly only get a pass to one this season.

You can likely get hooked up with a deal at either shop if you buy directly from them.

I've only had experience with 2nd Tracks. It took them about 3 days to get the job done.

As for resorts,

You can't go wrong with either. Just expect Basin to get tracked out a hell of a lot faster on a powder day.

Check out Twin Peaks as well, I've gone in there and it was really good, and all my buddies who live in SLC have great things to say about the place.

And if you ever need bootfitting Inkline is a phenomenal place to go.

You're going to love it there dude, the Ogden resorts are serious fun. The vibe in Utah is something else too..

Thanks my dudes. I'm from NC, and the biggest place I've been is Snowshoe WV lol. So you can imagine my hype level right now!

Make sure you get down to AltaBird at some point this winter even if you don't have a pass there.

Oh yeah, that's on the list as well. I'm hoping to get a good sample of Utah skiing for my first season here. As far as getting to the slopes, whats the best thing to do for AltaBird? Park at the bottom and ride the bus, drive up there, etc. Drove up there the other day and I imagine that road gets pretty crazy during season.

Im not from SLC but Ive skied Alta quite a bit, I always just took my car up there. Ive driven up there in some storms too and its not too bad. From my experience they do a pretty good job of keeping the roads clear, just need to worry about those stormy days.

What kind of car do you have? if you have AWD/4WD i think you'd be all good. But maybe taking the bus might not be a bad idea.

I should be good when it comes to road conditions, I've got a yota 4x4. I was primarily worried about how long it would take because of traffic when driving up there. Thanks again for the help man.

You'll be fine with 4-wheel.

The time it will take to get up there varies. Often times the canyons are closed when it snows. It can take 30 minutes or up to several hours depending on road conditions/traffic.

I like to use CanyonAlerts on Facebook/Twitter to keep up to speed on closures and delays.

Just gave them a follow. Thanks. Will definitely be using that when my buddies from back home come out here to shred. Coming from a place that gets like 10in of snow a year, this shits gonna take some getting used to haha. Looking forward to not having to drive 2hrs to the slopes though.

If your living in Ogden, i highly suggest checking out Powder mountain, super awesome local resort.

It's not nearly as bad as the internet makes it seem. Ogden used to be a little sketch, but it's been improving lately. It's a cool town, I love it there.

damn yea I ended up in wisco for school but will be in utah for winter break to see everything!
