like i always say: go do something with an undergrad degree first. its becoming more and more the norm to go to grad for film, its just that much more intensive. that being said, grad film programs like to see that you're an educated intelligent person, for example i'm studying anthropology...there is such a thing as a boring film school candidate and they don't like those.

grad film schools also like to see you know something about film. just double major if youre worried about getting some education outside of film.

alpinecowboy nailed it, I think. Get something that will establish you a broad base, something that you can use in multiple avenues. Getting a bachelors in photo/video prod. type shit will only get you a small range of jobs.

if the job you want is in that small range there is no way that someone with an anthropology degree will get the job over someone with specific training in that field.

phrosty hates me but that wont change the fact that i disagree with him. its not so much that someone with only a film degree is going to be a bad filmmaker, but that someone with a broad based education (provided that its academically rich) is going to be better suited - of course thats assuming that they go to grad school for film afterwards. id say that anthropology or any other degree isn't going to matter for shit in some of the technical aspects of film, but good films are comprised of interrelated components and if the film is going to be good then all of those have to be supported by a strong understanding of what the film is supposed to be about...
i want to write and direct, so i need to understand people, theory, constructs, etc. in order to effectively build the film at a deeper level and thats where the education comes in. not that the matrix was a particularly amazing trilogy, but those guys werent just film students, they studied philosophy and religion and of course it shows in the subject matter.
phrosty its not an attack on you or the tons of other kids that approach film careers in the same way you are, its just the route i'm taking.

as far as writing goes, sure it's not that important, but for someone like myself, with a post production emphasis, it's of vital need, it's not like I can just think of how to use maya, or aftereffects, like you can come up with a story.

My post ^ was in reference to your lifetime career objectives. People change they're minds, circumstances change, shit happens. Having a bachelor's degree in something that will provide multiple avenues of employment with a graduate degree in prod. would be ideal for anyone wanting to go into the film industry.
If you fall out ass backwards, like many do, you'll have that bachelor's to help you redirect your goals and will allow you many opportunities you wouldn't have if you got your undergrad in film.
