Will there ever be another Candide Thovex

After rewatching Few words, CandideKAmera and all of the OFTD parts It has been reaffirmed in my brain how much better Candide skis than every other big pro skier. He truly is on another level with the only people potentially touching him being Sammy Carlson and Sean Pettit but the fact is these guys just don't ski as fast or as gnarly lines. Candide is just on another level it's kind of crazy how fast he skis lines of consequence and then he does tricks as well while skiing at Mach 10..

Does anyone think any other skier is as good as Candide?
Will there ever be another young kid who will rise to his level?
What has Candide been up to and when will we see a proper level video part again from him?

Without going through an extensive list, the first guy that always comes to mind could be Delorme. Does anyone ski as fast and still maintain as much style as him?

Delorme is amazing.. but he's def not on Candide level.. he skis really fast.. but not in the same terrain of consequence.. thats the real difference.. Delmore is top 10 in the world no doubt but I truly don't think he can touch Candide..

I suspect he could handle his own in bigger, more consequential terrain and hope he does in the future.

I agree though. I'm not sure there is anyone who can touch Candide. What about T-Hall? He's probably the closest anyone came to touching Candide when it comes to being successful in all areas of freeskiing (except for competitive freeride stuff).

Gnarly level big mountain shredding at top speed.. All while doing tricks .. Other skiers like Ian Mcontosh ,Hugo Harrision (OG) ski lines as quick but they don't touch him when it comes to flow and how he flows with terrain he rides like Nicholas Muller snowboards and then does it Hong Mach 10 in fall and you potentially die terrain.. Watching Candide ski is like so gnarly that you stop and forget that all of his video parts are 10 mins plus long.. And pretty much every single trick is on a higher level than pretty much any skier .. His old rastafaride parts could still be in today's movies and stand out and that was 12 years ago and the video parts are sometimes 15 mins long.. I think you all need to understand how next level that is.. No one in any other action sport is on such a higher level than everyone else.. Not travis rice, not Travis Pastrana, not Kelly slater or John John Florence.. Candide is in my opinion the most talented action sports athlete ever .. He can also skate and snowboard quite well.. I'm curious if you guys actually think any other skier could rise to his level if they spent a winter together.. Maybe tanner is on. That level I haven't seen ring the alarm yet..

Candide is easily one of my favourite skiers, but I don't think anyone in any sport is on the same level as Travis Rice.

Someday there will be. Candide doesn't have some crazy superhuman powers... he just grew up in special circumstances and became an amazing skier.

People used to say, "There will never be another Michael Jordan in the NBA"... and then came Kobe and LeBron who are arguably at the same level as MJ.

Your trippin if you don't think Candide is on higher level.. He shreds more gnarly lines and his trick selection and speed is superior .. In saying that Travis is ammmmmazzzing but he isn't on Candide level I'm sorry.. It's just not true.Candide skis that fast always .. I've snow , moguls Mach 10 24/7 till you see it in person you truly can not appreciate how talented that guy really is..from his crazy gaps to rail slides to his incredible lines at speed .. Is seriously ludicrous

I don't necessarily agree. Candide is a legend, no doubt. Top...1ish. But I can't say that he's on "another level" above everyone else in skiing history. That really depends on how you define "best skier".

Petit and Sammy go bigger with modern freeskiing tricks off natural terrain than Candide. Seth tossed a lot of on-axis stuff off significantly bigger rocks. Hoji lands as smoothly as Candide, but doesn't have the trick bag. Tanner has spent the last two years skiing super gnarly 60 degree stuff. PWhite and Chris Logan are murdering the BC jump game, but aren't skiing major no-fall lines. And the big mountain usual suspects are completely on Candide's level of dropping rocks and skiing fast, but aren't tossing tricks. There are a lot of people who are more impressive than Candide in one area or another, but have their caveats.

Nobody disagrees that Candide has been writing the history books for almost 20 years, but you gotta define what you mean by "as good". Dude made the record books for Chad's Gap, but Durtschi holds that current record. Know what I mean?

Correct, many people could physically and mentally do gnarlier stuff, they just don't have access to skiing. Possibly top level surfers if they grew up on a mountain instead of at a beach.

Honestly, I think the closest person right now would be Sammy.. he still has some years of progression in him and he's getting into the backcountry/big mountain scene so it will be interesting to see.

Sammy and Candide are definitely different when it comes to style.

Im stoked to see the progression of Karl as well. He has been killing it in the park, urban, and backcountry. I really want to see him on some bigger lines, that would be sick.

But idk man, Kye could be up there too..

Or Keegan will be the next Candide

I think it's definitely possible, but we need to add time scale to the equation. I mean if you think about Candide in the super early days - he was 100% on another level with tricks... but the big mountain crazy shit wasn't until many years later in his career.

Henrik Is on a pretty substantial other level with tricks right now, but he hasn't been in the game long enough to see how the rest of his skills develop.

I definitely think it's possible, but it very well could be a once-in-a-generation type of skill level that Candide has.

I can't wait for the next Candide, but I don't think the original is done quite yet.

That's my point. What are you saying no one touches him at? How many dub corks is Candide tossing in the backcountry? How many 80 foot cliffs is he backflipping? How many closeouts is he spinning onto? Does he have the most X-Games medals? I'm not trashing Candide in any way - he's been a hero of mine for 15 years - but "a level above" everyone who has ever skied across the board is a big claim.

For me I think it'll be Jesper Tjader. He's the first skier that just blew my mind the way Candide did back in the day. His double backflip over the death gap in 2014 was like Candide hitting that hip straight on at superpark. When he gets older I'm sure he'll start to branch out to backcountry and other crazy projects just like Candide.

I don't see Jesper venturing out much honestly which also requires skis longer than 155s god damn his skis are short. I understand what you mean by Jesper, he's a crazy little dude

I dunno man. Pettit, Sage, and others go damned huge and rip just as fast. Maybe it just looks like Thovex is going so much bigger and faster because of how small he is. I'm not saying he's not the better all-round skier, but I don't think you can say he's a better big mountain skier who goes bigger and faster.

There will never be another Candide. There will never be another McConkey. Or another Wallisch. Or THall. Or Morrison. Or Harlaut. They have all impacted and shaped skiing in their own unique way, so what they have done has now already been done. The next big names will be unique as well, but they will be the first of their name to be as they are.

Witnessed the Candide Invitational 2007 at La Clusaz. When Candide was hitting the step up everybody was sitting down. He was taking speed switch straight bomb whole mountain. When I looked at Big Bertha (jump where he crashed) from the chair-lift, first tought thats just a giant ice sculputure of La Clusaz sign, but wait - it was f'kn giant jump, even too big for Candide. But he tried. Imagine if he did that. And recovery after the crash? And then freeride domination? Above human possibilites.
Nobody can touch Candide, his style, his heart and skiing. Candide for president!

This guy knows what's up!' If God skied he would try ski like Candide and probably fail.. I'm a very good skier.(claim but it's true just in reference to knowing what's up) . I know many many very good big pro skiers and when I watch Candide it's super human every single fucking time .. Also I hear rumours from his filmers that he has hours and hours of unreleased footage he will never let anyone see becasue the style isn't perfect or a hand drag here or blah blah.. I want to see a Candide /Travis Colab movie.. Or another proper movie from him.. I don't mean to be a dick sucker in anyway shape or form.. Candide just truly blows my brain away every single time I watch him ski and its infatheramably amazing how fast and hard he skis.. If you don't understand how much better he is than everyone else then you crazy...


Here would be the best test in my brain if we edited every single skiers best video parts together would they stack up to candides one (his would be 2 hours long if non stop hammer after hammer after hammer)

Ask Skye Dardain (candides American right hand man) about how amazing Candide is..the only guy who got close to this level Was CR Johnson pre head injury.. He was starting to touch Candide and then he got hurt .. Since then the only 3 guys catching him would be tanner, Sean p and maybe Sammy and then Parker white coming up behind (he doesn't have the tech big mountain skills though to win a FWT crown maybe one day jut not yet)

So I put a call out to any one with spare time and video editing skills .. Out together a Candide best off all time edit.. And then drop it for the world to remember that it has a God that skis amongst us.. He truly is on another level and I just rewatched all the rastafarides and even those are amazing (especially French toast)

I never got to see pre-injury Candide because I didn't get really into the freeskiing scene until 2007, right after his injury. But I remember my freshman year of college in 2011 was the first time I really watched Candide Kamera and I was blown away. Since then I've gone back and watched most of his old stuff and I agree with everyone saying that no one is on his level and the only one capable of getting there eventually is Sammy, possibly. My first ski movie was War!, and something thats easy for kids to forget or not realize, is Candide was a primarily park skier back in the day. At the beginning of his War! seg its, "Candide Thovex, illusive jib ninja" old school Candide was about as good on rails compared to everyone else as Will Wesson is now, think about that.

Back to the main question, the only one capable of getting to Candide's level is probably Sammy. Sammy, like Candide, cut his teeth in the park, and we've all seen him raise the bar there what with the first real triple and everything. The park aspect is the only reason I would say seany P won't be on Candide's level because while his big mountain/freeride game might get there his park game is comparatively weak to the other people on the elite tier of skiers. Personally I like watching Pettit ski big mountain more and I think he skis bigger, techier lines than Sammy but Sammy is undeniably an amazing skier on all aspects of the game and I think as he progresses he'll end up skiing more technically insane stuff and he could possibly get to where Candide is now.

All that being said, the man is still going and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon so probably not.

i think i'm one of the guy that can answer that question!!! and the answer is NO!!!!
candide is one the fews who made what freesking is nowadays, but he's still here.
he is one of the guys whos started "newschool skiing" ( that's how we used to call it back in the days) , candide was one of the first skier in europe allowed to ride the snowboard park back there!!! candide influenced a lot of riders and pushed the limit in every discipline he's been riding!!! if i say that it's cause of him i've been a pro for 14 years cause i wanted to be like him!!! but the thing is that candide won pretty much every single gold medal at every biggest comp with his own natural style!!! and now you look at his video he is the most watch extrem sport athlete on youtube even before the biggest legend on different extrem sport!!!! candide is the fucking man, the most humble person i've met and he is still here
so no there will never be another candide! cause teh sport we love started with him and he's still here showing how hard he's shredding and how no one one can actuallyy skiing like him

I can't believe sammy is being mentioned. Sure, he can ski a pillow line well and spin off some avalanche barriers but, like tanner, he's light years behind candide in terms of BC speed and size.

Dane Tudor has the talent to be a part of this conversation - he can do it all - but we need to see more EDIAS-like content from him.

Candide #1. Daylight second. I do disagree though that he's well above Travis - have you seen those switch dub 10s and BS double rodeos travis does?

Pastrana is on that level, he has been able to excel at all aspects of moto, especially freestyle and has been behind almost everything that FMX has become (along with Carey hart who got the ball rolling).

T-Rice is also on that level, every time I watch his movies I pray that a skier will step up to the backcountry booters like he has. I believe it's getting close and part of it may be the camera game, but skiers are not building/hitting features on that level yet

Basically when Lolo comments on Candide, you listen, simply Bc he attested to everything in Candides movie, I went to Candide's world premiere in Paris back in 2012 and I can say from being there in person you can feel the energy he brings to his home country and it is energy very similar to what Jordan brought to the NBA in america. Candide is the best and always will be due to the natural evolution of the sport, everyone is too specifically disciplined in one area now.

One thing I never really hear is when he won x games slope 2007... he hadn't really skied slope in awhile and came out of almost nowhere to beat all the current slope guys. It was insane. if you haven't seen his run.... go look it up.

ozzywrongDelorme is amazing.. but he's def not on Candide level.. he skis really fast.. but not in the same terrain of consequence.. thats the real difference.. Delmore is top 10 in the world no doubt but I truly don't think he can touch Candide..


You are wondering just about backcountry and big mountain skier? If so, you are right that there are not so many young skiers on his level because they are still in the park as Candide was before his injury. Most of the best skiers are getting to backcountry when they are older. I think that Henrik, Phil, Bobby and many more are still gonna show us what is possible to throw out of slopes. Its just a matter of time.

A lot of truth spoken in this thread. Candide is king. What I can't spot anyone saying when mentioning comp results is, he won FWT his FIRST year. I mean that's a comp you need so much knowledge and experience and he just baaam pulls it of then keeps moving to the next thing. There might be a skier later that skis crazier stuff, faster and with the same consistency but remember that kids these days grow up with well shaped parks, with incredible gear and folks that can see the potential of the sport thus support. Candide was born in a different era, and what inspires me the most from him is that he is still keeping up. He's STILL the best overall skier in the world.

wameronMy first ski movie was War!, and something thats easy for kids to forget or not realize, is Candide was a primarily park skier back in the day.

His footage was primarily park but it was well known that Candide skied big mountain back in the day, he just did not get filmed doing it. He grew up in Europe so he had access to some pretty big terrain.

If all they are doing is skiing park they will never be that great at big mountain. Most of the guys who go from park to big mountain always skied big mountain, they just didn't get filmed doing it. It was well known that Candide was a big mountain skier back in the day, he just didn't get filmed doing it. If those guys are not out there actively skiing the mountain, not saying they are or are not, I would not know, they will never be like Sage or Candide.

Nah not possible, freeskiing was in its infancy when he came onto the scene, and he evolved with it. The only skiers you can mention that come close to Candide are following the trail he broke.

Henrik , phil and Bobby aren't very good big mountain skiers.. They lack the formalbtraining to ski at that level watch henny ski big mountain and his style and teqniqie just aren't there.. Candide is on another level cause he skied moguls so hard

I don't think there will ever be another Candide. You see Candide defined what it was to be a pioneer in our sport and built his career off of being the og and doing certain things first. In this day in age I don't see anyone even coming close to being what we define as a pioneer because the level of talent has risen so much that its going to seemingly take a miracle to truly stand out in the way that Candide did. There was a line of dialogue that stood out me in Few Words in which Xavier de la Rue was talking about how easy it is to replicate something you have seen but how difficult it is to be the first one to do it.

And with that being said, surely we will see new things year after year and new levels of gnarly and amazing skiing, but Candide defined a point in our history and to replicate that is something I do not see happening at this point in time. Furthermore you have to take in to consideration of Candide's personality with him possibly being the most humble person I know of and to me that in itself is incredibly special in our sport.

So all in all I don't think we will see another Candide, but who knows, we've been wrong before.

They wont you are right. But their unique style is possible to be a bit changed in the future. And have you seen latest Bobbys edit? But we will see, there is not that one backcountry style that will develope to this uniqe style as Candide. But to be honest I just threw some park names, that are one of the best these days. My thought was just to say, that tthere sure are some people, who now just ride park.
