Perhaps ironically for an online journalist (doubly so given this post), I don't inherently like the idea of using the media as a means to create memories of those lost. Perhaps because I see grief as a deeply personal thing and have some difficulty publicly displaying emotion. As such, when this poll was initially published, I wasn't moved by his winning it as a potential memorial for Aaron, who died in early this year doing what he loved.
But the more I think about it, the more it would be fitting. Even if only because, being one of the most humble men I've ever met, he would have been mortified to see such a push for him to win while he was still with us. Perhaps more importantly, many of Aaron's friends and family have picked up the cause and would clearly be moved to see him win this award, so I decided to post this up.
For me he is also unquestionably the British skier of the year, the decade, and a deserved winner in his own right. He would have gone on to win this award year on year had his life not been cut tragically short. The film he masterminded, Late, is an unmatchable piece of British skiing history, the first major freeride production filmed exclusively on British soil. I was loosely involved, mostly in a bitching role; complaining about the weather, how far we had to walk and most of all that bloody tent. But I digress.
Here's the film, if you want to check it out, I still can't watch without tearing up:
