Where does one responsibly recycles used gear?

I'm talking about helmets that have too many years on them and are unsafe to sell or give away. Ropes that you won't want to use cause overuse and fraying. I'm just looking for a place to get rid of unusable gear.

I feel like I could just toss it in the trash but curious if anyone has any info on the subject of recycling unusable gear.
Any information would be great.

For helmets I don't know of anything, but for old ropes you might try posting something on Mountain Project, I know some people on there like to craft with retired ropes. But in general it is pretty tough to find a good outlet for unusable gear.

Yeah mountain project people love doing stuff.

Make something out of the rope op....like a rug. Or you can just use it for miscellaneous things around the house.

Any helmet is better than no helmet. I sacrificed an old ski helmet when I started getting into whitewater kayaking this year. Post it up on craigslist if you dont have any need friends, just be plain about the condition.
