Coming off a broken tibia and fibia

So last year I broken my tib and fib at aplental night skiing. I was going super slow and had a forward twisting fall. I'm a big guy and my leg was demolished. The surgeon wanted to take it and give me a prosthetic. Fast forward 9 months. My wife didn't let them take it and I'm dealing with tons of ankle pain from the pins holding my tibial nail in place. I've got a baby boy on the way and I can't imagine getting hurt again needing to be a father. How do you guys get over the feet of another traumatic injury? I'm not scared of the pain but I'm scared of counting on my wife to do everything. Skiing is my drug. I almost went to hood 3 months after my injury just to slide on snow. Try and get in for some serious PT if you aren't already. Talk to them about your goals and see what you can do.
It's better to get in as good a shape as possible when coming back from a major injury than to go out too soon and fuck it all up.
That said I feel you. When you get the "You're out for _______" but you can't stay away. It's tough man.
If you do go out take it easy. I would say be prepared in case you can never again ski at the level you're used to. I'm supposed to be off the slopes from my head injuries. I can't stay away, but I keep things pretty mellow. Sometimes like last Northern Hem winter I'll go pretty much the whole season without riding much.
If your time on the slopes is cut down, but you're still passionate see if there's another way you can get involved. For me it's building the parks, some people filming/photography, some people build skis, etc.
Just a way to keep involved in some way regardless of where your riding is at, or how much you're out there.
Hopefully with some time and good rehab you can get things to a point where at the very least you can make some turns once in a while. I think it's really all about just finding that balance. Figuring out what your limitations are from your injury, and what you're able to do on the slopes without putting too much risk on yourself. Hopefully there's some sort of middle ground that at least get's you back out there.
Have you ever snowboarded before? if you have any skills there maybe try to get out on that as it's a different flex to your leg that might be easier. Idk. I don't know the situation and I'm def not a doctor but hoping you can get out on the slopes man.

I feel you mane. broke my tib/fib in a failed cliff drop at alta years ago. The next season was too soon, I should have taken it off. The pain was horrible, I could not put pressure on my left shin. I basically skied one legged. It took me almost 3 years to get back to full send. After battling back and finally getting back to normal, I then blew up my knee. It was soul crushing and a total mental fuck. That next season started out rough, I was super timid. I was overthinking everything and my skiing sucked. It really took until I had my first real crash after surgery to realize everything was gonna be ok. I also wish that I took offseason conditioning as seriously as I do now. Make your body into a fucking tank. You got this!
