Have Big Mountain/Powder Skiing video Parts Become less gnarly then they used to be?

maybe im seeing the wrong videos or something but it seems like everyones just hitting pretty average sized backcountry booters and im not saying that i could dub cork a big BC jump i just think parts used to be way gnarlier. Like when you watch pettit's part in Attack of La Nina He hucks 90 ft cliffs and slays huge AK spines but when you watch his parts in the super proof movie the terrain is way less steep, way less exposed and the tricks he' s throwing seem to be about the same. people used to hit chads and pyramid and now you never see those gaps in edits/movies (ya i know chads gap was blown up by ski patrol). that's just a few examples but this seems to be kind of across the board. I guess what im wondering is am i the only one that thinks this and if not then why is this happening

Some years are better than others for spines. Sometimes it depends on the conditions they get. One For the Road, TGR's from fall 2011, has some of the best spine riding I have ever seen.

That Seth segment is also nuts because he really did not get good snow. If you watch the DVD extras from that movie Gaffney talks about it.

I thought the Masquerade had some pretty big cliffs, and Petit does a 720 in the middle of a pretty classic big line. Petit has always been more about tricks off cliffs and cliffs as opposed to crazy spine walls a la Sage. Petit does do a pretty nutty spine in Attack of La Nina. I don't think his Superproof stuff is necessarily off of his MSP stuff.

i think shit was just more wild west back then in general. people didn't understand or care as much about the physics/geometry of building jumps, or the capabilities of fatter/lighter/stronger skis; people just kept trying to go as big as humanly possible, evel knieval style. now i think guys are going after BC jump shots looking for more loft time, better asthetics, and a unique setup outside your standard booter in mind. all that wild west stuff was fucking unbelievable in its own time and palace but it wasn't sustainable, they had to get smarter

Definitely. Guys got tired of risking their lives every hit. Budgets shrank and Alaska became less accessible. This was about the same time touring started getting big. Golden Alpine Holidays started marketing and all of a sudden AK lines were replaced by ski touring pillows. Ian MacIntosh held it down on the charging frontier for a while. Hoji, despite being part of the pillow touring posse, threw down some ridiculous charging segs. Conditions also affect movies year to year. But really, people saw that they didn't have to be Evil Kneivel to pay the bills so they didn't.

Seth is the man.

There's only so much send you can do within human abilities, I think big mountain skiing has reached that as far as how big can you drop/ huck.

But that being said, it's really cool to see things like The Big Picture, which focuses more on style, creativity along with a good deal of send.

But yeah the new TGR movie is rowdy, check it

Seth is getting old, Candide is also going to start getting up there in age soon. Other skiers, IMO, just aren't on the same level, nor as consistent. A few GoPro videos don't matter to me, Im talking Legend status, just consistently setting the bar higher, and higher..

Who's going to fill their spots, as the gnarliest skiers on the face of this planet?

Also, on a similar note, where is our generations Plake or Morrison? Like that rebel, crazy, wild card skier that we all want to see. Someone should fill that spot, ASAP.

Ive read of the stoke factor that "newschoolers" of 1988-89 had, when Blizzard of Aahhhs came out.. That was before I was even born, but jeez do I wish there was a ski movie with that much soul nowadays.

Watch Hoji in Attack of La Nina. Some of the best pure big mountain skiing I have ever seen. Also check out Seven Sunny Days. He was doing more tricks off of cliffs and spinning off of pillows and backcountry booters. He is one of the best skiers on the planet. He also kills it in Superheroes of Stoke.

You are spot on about conditions. Some years you get crazy spines some years you don't.

Blizzard of Aahhhs is insane. The footage still holds up pretty well if you take into account the skinny skis. I love seeing inbounds lines at places like Squaw. I was young when Blizzard came out and I was seriously pumped. Everyone here should watch that movie. Schmidt/Plake/Hattrup deserve a ton of credit. They were some of the guys who helped the non-racers of today get paid.

Get rid of the electronic music and slow mo and go back to high speed high octane shots with some hard music like metal or something blasting in the background.

Would be cool to see an edit with some of that old school flair. I mean I love all the production but I miss the fuck it let's shred mentality and simplicity of the old shit.

Not saying that I want everything to change, but I'd be stoked if a company threw it back a bit.

also im not sure what ian mac has been up to the past year or two but he's definitely up there on the list of balls the wall charging dudes
