Competitions are the backbone of progression

ive heard quotes from pollard about how competitions hurt progression because nobody is out there trying radical shit, only things they know they can land. i have to disagree because although crazier things are hucked, the appearance of a trick in a comp gives it a legitimacy it could not achieve otherwise. If you watch someone huck a 10 in the backcountry, you can call him a crazy bitch and be done with it. On the other hand if a 10 is hucked in the x-games, you can bet that every single pro in the games will be able to stick it for next year.
My point is just that although crazier things go down, and that filming is more conductive to individual progression, competitions manage to pull the sport up as a whole.

Competitions give publicity.
They don't progress anything because every single trick has been thrown hundreds of times.
You call the switch10fest that was the US Open Big Air progression?

nope, the kid in the park destroying himself over and over to learn a new trick is the backbone of progression, comps are a paycheck.

yes and no, partly because of that, partly because of the year before, 1080s are in every comp goers bag of tricks. Since people dont only do comps, when those switch 10ers go out skiing on their own, theyll use that as a backbone to expand and bring even crazier shit into play. besides, since now everyone knows that 10s are commonplace, they also know they're going to have to bring something even bigger/steezier to next years open, therefore repeating the cycle and progressing the sport.

if E V E R Y O N E at a major contest throws down the same trick, that ain't progression.

As of late, it doesnt really seem like they are, but a few years ago. Possibly. Remember Andy Woods and Boyd Easley and how they got on the scene. Pipe comps also seem to be progressive to a point.

i think it would be soo much harder to be a comp skiier than a film skiier.

eh that sounded random. my point is that comp skiers should be respected a lot more- maybe theyre not throwing down new tricks all the time, bt throwing all those really hard tricks down right in a row is tough.

thread poster contradicts himself. if someone does a 10, then next year they all do. NEXT year is key word. they dont all learn 10s in their next run. they go elsewhere to progess their abilities. comps are for tv and money.not progression
to progress, rules must be broken.

Progression is only really found in 1 spot. In the local parks where there are kids absoutly wercking themselves try after try just to learn a new trick even if it is a 360 or 180. it may not be progression on a huge level but its the best kind of progression out sport can ask for
