Could the ski industry run a successful 'King of the Road'?

Having followed it for a few years via Thrasher and more recently VICE, I've always wondered if skiing could pull this off?

I know freeskier did something similar a few years ago but it seemed so watered down in comparison to Thrashers challenge book.


Who would the teams be?
Challenges?
Locations?

This would be the big issue. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the riders in King of the Road have to pay for quite a bit of it themselves. This doesn't mean that the companies aren't giving them incentives to cover the cost, but companies shouldn't be able to just spend a whole ton of money to make their team win.

Freeskiers seems similar to Thrashers KOTR, they have normal and weird tricks to do, challenges like chugging something and a freeskier tattoo like the "down for life" thrasher tattoo.

I feel like at least in an urban setting it would be more difficult since you have to set everything up. If it were organized well it would be sweet, 3 teams, cash prize and only a week or two to do the challenges. I think overall it would be hard because its skiing, even snowboarding would be as hard. I can really only see this happening with the less serious and more creative teams.

What would you guys suggest is the thing that makes this format work? Its not a new idea, but from watching Thrasher you really have to get the challenges right and have the crew be the exact right types to make it awesome.

Part of why Thrasher KOTR works so well is because of how much of an institution it has become. The teams want to win because they want to win.... kind of a chicken and egg thing with starting from scratch.
Also, skate teams seem far more cohesive than ski teams.

Agreed. Skatings different, the teams always go on tour together and everybody is tight, skiing doesnt have shit like that except for things like LTC or the Faction Collective where most of the team is all together but its just to get an edit done usually. I cant put it into words for some reason but I still feel that skating is just far better suited for something like KOTR. I still wanna see it pulled off eventually, Freeskiers version isnt bad though.

The other problem is that skating is super conducive to anywhere. Everything is skateable. That's true to a degree with skiing, but not in the same way. There's more moving pieces.

There's so many ams out there now too I think it would be pretty easy to find guys who don't have their whole season planned out yet and could give a few weeks to a tour like this. Plus, free exposure for them.

True, stept vs 4bi9 vs LTC or something. Depending on who runs it or what company may be in it there would possibly need to be someone like a team manager to control the teams and problems they get into.

Plus most of the time in urban settings you have to set everything up, lights, jump, rope tow etc. while skating the only thing to setup really is maybe lights. Also skating is more common in the streets so authoritys may be less lenient with skiing since theyre usually bigger features instead of a 4 stair with a ledge behind a building.

A challenge was introduced as a joke that involved sexual acts with an underage girl but both teams completed it because it was worth a lot of points. Naturally the footage was never released for fear of legal repercussions. The U.S. is way too uptight about underage porn, its disgusting.

If it takes place in an area where you can hit urban and ski some good parks not too far away, that would make it way better than the Roadtrip Challenge. They were in Vermont, so the "urban" skiing challenges were pretty weak.
I'd say some place like Salt Lake City, Montreal or Minnesota would make it interesting, and would make the skiing part way better, which kinda sucked in Roadtrip Challenge.

Theoretically, we could organize it as the ugly stepchild of TAFT, KOTR, and G.N.A.R. Storm a local mountain, we have the local homie at the mountain who picks what the challenges are. Points for xyz, hit 12 resorts in 12 days or something like that, plus lifestyle shit from the van on the road.

It isn't impossible, it would just feel different than KOTR and require the teams to be at the same mountain at the same time.

Or, same format but instead of the same 12 mountains you have 3 teams going to 12 different mountains, but that would require 36 resorts being on board.

Or just don't tell the resorts. Could make everything a lot more fun (to watch at least!).

A couple years ago some swedish guys did something similar to KOTR, i think the edits are still online somewhere. I'll see if i can find them. They had some crazy challenges.

waddup squids, super down with this already have a fat challenge list written up from last summer brainstorm stye with a4 and the homies. with some sick challenges including snap or focus a racers poles, piggy back 2 p 2, shit like that. and some logistical gameplans, editing ideas like how kotr organizes the challenges. (not the most recent season on hbo obvi that shit was not cool) i WILL POST CHALLENGE LIST IF SOME FOLKS (ideally people with a lot of money) show some love. cause frfr a major cash prize is needed for some of these challenges. Cool hope this makes sense cause i am super piffed!

no because then when it comes to trick challenges it wont be as intense if clips are going back and forth and every trick on a board is different, id rather watch a snowboard team and ski team fight in an all out brawl at that point

Best thing ever! Maybe a bunch of film crews versus each other just for the hell of it is the way to go? Like start out small and then let it grow for each season.
