I need a new ski rack/box for this upcoming season, and I am having trouble deciding between the two. If I go with a rack, I'll probably get the Yakima FatCat 6. Anyone have any suggestions on which box to look at? Would be carrying 3-5 pairs of skis on average.
Box drops your milage but keeps your skis from getting salt all over them. You can use a box for more too. I use it for kayak paddles or gear in the summer.
If you keep grocery bags in the car, and cover the tips of the skis with them then wrap them in duct tape a little it prevents that.
I will say though that I only use our small SUV with the racks when its dry, if its stormy I take our truck with a covered bed which keeps the skis nice and clean
I have the same one. You will not be disappointed. I actually found myself using it all summer for fishing poles, paddles, random camping shit, etc. IMHO, much more options then a rack.

exactly why I'm getting it. it'll be great for fishing and beach trips. can you still fit a kayak rack if you move the box over to one side, instead of it being centered?

flat yak, probably not. if you have cradles for the yak, yes.
i just picked up a set of Thule racks and roof box today. I have no desire to clean road sludge off my skis twice a day when I get out. I picked both up on a used buy and sell site for $300. That's way cheaper than the $1000ish it would have cost me new. I'm psyched. Roof box all the way! I can throw camping stuff in it in the summer, too....small children....whatever.
I live in a small condo. Storage space is limited so I use the roof rack. Mainly use it driving all my friends to the hill. If its just me then ill remove the rack and just fold down the back seats. My car burns a bit more gas with the rack on but it is a decent solution for carrying a bunch of skis without taking up a lot of storage space at home.
I would say go with a rack. If you break really hard going like 80 on the highway, the plastic will crack and skis will go flying. I fit all my stuff in my trunk so I just go with a rack.
