So I'm a senior in highschool from Michigan and just got back from looking at CU Boulder and Colorado State. I liked CSU significantly more however it being 2.5 hours from skiing seems like a drawback. I'm used to getting 60-80 days a year in Michigan since I live only 25 minutes from a local hill. Would it be realistic to do this living in Fort Collins or would I probaly only have time to ski on the weekends due to the distance from the mountains?
boulders not a lot better, without traffic, i can get from foco to summit county in about 2 hours, from boulder its maybe 20-30mins faster. regardless your getting in your car and driving awhile. plus the big problem is I70, i've sat in that traffic for 4+ hours trying to go skiing for the day, usually more getting back, anyone going from the front range to summit has to deal with it.
the good thing about foco is you're 3 hours away from steamboat, which is an awesome mountain, and you'll never hit traffic going up there. a guaranteed 3 hour drive is way better than hoping you dont get stuck in traffic for 5+ hours(which is pretty likely) plus theres good backcountry close to us up around cameron pass, and you dont have to live in boulder..
I'm a freshman from minnesota at csu now and I have yet to answer most of those questions. Hopefully will get that figured out in the near future so I can go skeen n if so I'll update this thread
75% of the time it will take you more than 2.5 hours to get to or from the mountains, especially if you are a student skiing primarily on the weekends it could easily be 3.5+ hours and more if there is any snow coming through. do your best to go during the week and stay overnight if you can swing it
If you do it right, you can almost guarantee 2-2.5 hours. But that means up at 5:30, on the road by 6 and at the hill by 8. Wait for lifts to open, then you need to be back on the road by 2pm at the latest. I suggest more like 1 or 1:30. You'll still hit a little traffic on the way home, but max 3 hours home.
Unfortunately if you like skiing to close, you're going to be stuck in a parking lot.
i started going up the night before and sleeping in my car most days last winter. I had probably 10 days early season where i hit 170 traffic and it took an additional 2 hours or more, which kinda ruins the day. just park in the frisco walmart, get up at 7-8 and youre good to go!
Again i70 isnt only a ft collins problem, its a ft collins, boulder, denver, co springs etc.. problem, you cant avoid it unless you live in summit county, or live in ft collins and just go to steamboat.
Get a buddy in your same situation split gas and drive your car and don't even think about it. I did multiple day trips to my local mountain this season which is 6 hours away. Wake up at 1am, blaze bowls, ski all day, skip lunch, drive home. Easy
ski backcountry. I just graduated and we used to just go ski RMNP or cameron, it takes like 45 mins driving time to get to cameron pass and theres a few places that are easy access. You could leave after an 8am or a 9am and still have time to ski
