solid.sevenI need a new jacket and I'm tired of being cold every day I ski.
Basically looking for something between $200-300 that will be warm in 0-20F weather. Preferably black... or the most obnoxious shade of pink possible.
Also idk if it's just me but I was looking through some of this years gear and holy FUCK is it expensive... Like $400 for a freaking jacket? I'm so poor.
Buying this years gear is always a rip off. Especially when you know you can find for it 50% off over the summer. Only time I've bough current gear was when oakley had that sweet purple/black/white simon dumont signature jacket that I absolutely had to have. Yes I was that gaper in the simon suit, yes the heckles "do a backflip simon!" I got from the chairlift were deserved. Now I'm still a gaper but in less conspicuous and more technically proficient gear (that jacket fell apart after only a season and was never very waterproof).
If you want to save cash, you should see if there are any gear swaps coming up in your area. Lots of the rich folks that buy stuff at full price dump their used gear there so they can upgrade to the latest and greatest, you can find some really nice stuff. October and November is when most towns have them, usually as fund raising for volly patrol, ski clubs, or public schools. Otherwise I buy stuff discounted off of whiskeymilitia (backcountry.com's discount site) or sierra trading post. Pro tip: if you put something in your cart on sierra trading post but don't buy it, they will often email you a coupon for an additional 10% off whatever was in your cart a week later.
I second the layering bit though, go shell plus down puffy underneath, synthetic down like primaloft is crazy warm.
