So I'm coming close to when I really need to decide about what I'm gonna do with my life and I'm debating on whether to go to college or go into the real world. For reference I am a filmmaker and that is the path I want to take for sure. I've been going over my options and has anyone here ever converted a box truck to make it livable? I was thinking like a 24 foot truck and I came up with some good plans to transport all my film equipment and ski gear as well. I have designed it so it has a ton of storage, a kitchen, a desk and a table for eating as well as insulation and it would have solar on the roof. I would do freelance work probably in British Colombia cause that's where I want to go. Just wondering although I probably wont go with this option cause it would be expensive. Any thoughts? and feel free to call me crazy cause I just might be it
I hadn't looked at one of these but they look pretty cool. Definitely would be easier to maneuver through trafic and the city and as well. Also more discrete for urban missions. The only problem is I would have to find a way to get more storage. As a filmmaker I have tons of lights, stands, tripods and other gear it would be tough but I might be able to make it work
Everyone I've ever known that had this idea completely flaked and did nothing to see it through. Likely because if they had 50 grand to convert a box truck into a mobile home they wouldn't be day dreaming about living out of a box truck. It would be easier to buy an RV, or a truck with a camper and tow all your shit in a trailer.
If you do it, know you're starting from scratch to create something for a very small and niche group of people, something that very few of exist for sale, if at all. A good design will be an investment. When you decide to move out of this, you can sell it for a gain without doubt. This being said, design it with flexibility in mind for many things and sturdy enough to not need repairs in the next few years, so it can be sold as-is.
While I'm not a structural engineer, I am working in/formally educated in architecture and would gladly work with you to create the best design, and determine how to structure/mount everything. I'm sure that you could design it to work out and be plenty functional yourself, but little touches like a view of the stars from bed or choosing sound absorbing materials to make it feel more cozy and like home make spending so much time in the space feel much more comforting.
