What has led to the bias against weed?

MinggWhen I was a kid I was taught that illegal things were bad. Which is pretty fair in my opinion. As a young teenager I also knew that marijuana was illegal and therefore it was automatically bad.

Not sure how it started out or how other people view it, but that is why I personally had a negative impression about it in my younger years.

supermagician__anyone who denies that weed is a gateway drug is actually a fucking idiot. I smoked weed before I smoked cigarettes, did a various handful of other things and it was literally because I knew I liked to smoke, and I knew I liked to get high.

I know multiple people who have developed cocaine, codeine, xanax addictions ect. ect. and guess what the first drug everyone did was? It's mild, and it really does prove that getting high is a fun thing to do.


I'm not saying that there should be a bias against it, but it also it quite obviously a gateway drug. A few years ago I would have argued the opposite side of this but I've watched some people go down very questionable paths due to the fact that weed just doesn't get them high enough, or the right high.

I'm not a frequent smoker, as it's hard to come by where I live... but I have become outraged by some of the bullshit that my family and teachers have been spewing about the "deadly gateway drug".

Living in Wisconsin has over-exposed me to the horrors of alcoholics and drunk drivers, which have killed/disabled a couple of my friends' family members. The fact that Alcohol is accepted and is such a big part of social gatherings, yet marijuana is shunned like it is destroying the world... is hard to accept. It's very interesting how people's minds have been altered to think backwards.

Interested in what you guys think started this big uprising against the devil's lettuce throughout history. I know media influence and lack of education are huuuge factors... but how did it all start?

spliff.LifeThis eats at me all day everyday, especially when I find myself doing it too. Like every so often my dad arbitrarily freaks out about marijuana and 'pot heads' ruining the country. Then my family, mom included who doesnt smoke or anything, are like "Whoa, dad what brought this on? lots of successful and intelligent people use marijuana just like alcohol" and he normally gets semi-logical

ESBIn the early 20th century there was a well-documented smear campaign against cannabis which eventually led to an official ban in 1937. Propaganda like the film "Reefer Madness" and similar efforts to discredit weed are largely responsible for negative attitudes that persist today.

If you do your research you'll find multiple reasons for why this smear campaign was actually started; among them racism against Mexican immigrants; regulation for regulation's sake (keeping government agencies busy and funded fighting the devil weed); as well as industries such as paper and cotton that saw hemp as a threat to their business, and lobbied for its criminalization.
