Doing a little informal research for a column I'm writing, and wanted to open it up for NS.

Do ski movie premieres matter to you these days? Does the flood of online content make you content? Did you go to a premiere last year? Do you have premiere plans for this season? What's different between watching something at home and watching it in a theater with your buddies/complete strangers?

I'd go to every premiere if they were more like this:

open floor, maybe rented gallery space
no seating
kegs
hotdogs
slaps playing before the movie
projector playing some hot shit before the movie (maybe an opening edit from the homies to set the mood) while folks are minglin
athletes chillin with everyone, not on some bullshit stage
more kegs
friendly slapfight matches or other competition for sponsor swag
finally the movie starts once everyones liquored
watch the movie
hootin and hollerin
ovation
afterparty

worst premieres are in cramped theaters where everyone sits, beer is hard to get, and its hard to socialize. shit should be more like a concert/party where you can connect with folks. thats how you'll get more people to come out.

the worst part is that they don't seem to happen that much anymore, companies should cut colleges some deals so they re easier to host

I typically host 2 or 3 premiers a year. That shit is expensive to do. Companies could do a favour and cut the cost a bit.

actually pretty accurate. My favorite part about iF3 was being able to get back together with homies I hadn't seen in a while, meeting new people and all of that shit. I've been to a premier where we got into the theatre and everyone was already sitting down and not really socializing and that was kind of weird. It doesn't help that it was in this giant theatre that was hardly filled. That was a weird vibe lol.

I hope premieres will always be around. It's what gets me through the fall skiing-wise. It's cool to see some friends that you haven't seen all summer, watch some good skiing, and talk skiing at the bar afterwards.
Sure there's a good amount of content online, but most full lengths you have to buy them, and honestly I don't mind, cause they're the third of the price they used to be when your only option was dvds.
I hope it'll all cycle back to doing full lengths or saving your footage and drop it in the fall. I feel like it's cooler both for the rider and the viewer, to keep it secret all season and then make a bigger impact when the project drops.

yeah I was gonna host one for Level 1 last fall but the cost of hosting one is kinda crazy and there was no way I was gonna make much of a profit

Have some experience with this.

Running One Love at U of U we did a lot of premieres. The best turnout we had was for PBP's second to last movie with Karls redirect segment, this happened because it was before the movie was available on Itunes and everyone in Utah knows Karl and it was the only premiere in SLC.

We have had premieres where less than 25 people came because they were already out online or their was already a showing in SLC.

So a message to film companies get ski clubs involved on your first premier in a city even if it isnt on a campus to maximize benefits for both parties and your fans.

Also backyard party/ premieres are by far the best. Hoodcrew Chuuch combo from a few years ago takes the cake, just use more low key mediums to promote it because if it is on fb 9 cop cars will be there at 10:30 halfway through your movie.

Bottom line, premieres should still be relevant simply for the gathering of minds and good times!

This is basically how the Level 1 premiere at Moment goes every year. Big projector on the wall of the factory, outside, kegs kegs kegs, contests for the groms to win some stuff (shoe chuggin red bulls and eating onions), local band plays afterwards, athletes hangin out with everyone, factory tours before the movie, local rippers edits playing before the movie...it gets better every year.

Yep, nailed it.

I like going to premiers but it's mostly for the social aspect with the movie being an added bonus. You're getting impatient for winter and you know that you're going to see loads of friends and acquaintances from the local ski community who are just as itchy and stoked on winter as you are. You get to shoot the shit and catch up with everyone, many of whom you may not see much of over the summer. It's a perfect way to build excitement for the season.

In Banff last Fall a local publishing company started throwing a 'Winterstoke' night for locals which worked really well. Locals submit edits, the top ten get picked and shown on a big screen, winners are picked and prizes given, there's a trade show, and everyone hangs out and drinks.

Im just there for the raffle and free lift ticket deals. I hate, hate, hate having to pay for full price tickets outside of my season pass. I'd rather just watch the movie on my couch, while stoned and eating a pizza.

I agree with what everyone has said already, ski premiers should be a place to nerd out about the film and skiing in general. Also just the right amount of rowdiness and tomfoolery are key as well at a well done showing Went to a Warren Miller premier with some friends and it was a pretty bland affair. Andreas Hatviet was on the cover of the poster they were handing out and I made a comment about whether that was him or Jossi Wells, and the wme guy had no idea who either were. smh dude come on get your shit together

I think it depends where you go to a premiere. If you are at Squaw for the Matchstick premiere it is absolutely insane. 3 showings and just the most insane party ever. But a lot of MSP stuff has been shot at Squaw over the years so that makes sense.

I'm not a Warren Miller Films person (the man himself is different and old films) but it's pretty rad to be at the world premiere in Salt Lake.

If you are in a ski town (SLC, PC, Tahoe, Breck, etc) then they are events that are amazing. The after party's, industry people, and just a great time. But those are few and far between.

I did attend however a Level 1 premiere in Columbus, OH a few years ago after a rail jam at LCC Pavilion and it was pretty sweet also.

But nothing beats Matchstick in Squaw, that should be a skiers bucket list thing.

Freshtival in Calgary is one of the best parties of the year and fun as hell to go to for skiers and nonskiers.
They premier 6 movies, 2 a night, into a shitty little theater downtown then have a huge afterparty at a bar somewhere.
Honestly one of the biggest things I look forward too

They're definitely a popular event on college campus'. A lot of hype from the students that are skiers - but, people who are interested in the sport generally get pretty stoked on it when they see the ridiculousness of some movies. Pretty good way to introduce new people into the sport.

I would say premieres are very much alive, at least on college campus'.

1. Throw anyone out wearing Arcteryx or North Face
2. Don't charge 10-20$ for tickets.
3. Stop taking yourselves so seriously. You made a ski movie, you're not fucking Martin Scorsese.
4. Cheap beer.
5. Let people bring in outside beer.
6. Offer food.
7. Stop with the lame gear tosses. If you're going to throw something out, make sure its something cool like a pair of skis or bindings. If it can't cause a serious head injury, it doesn't deserve to be tossed out.

After going to ski movie premieres every season since I can remember I can honestly say that its really the energy at all the premieres that make them what they are. At the last preseason premiere I was at the vibe was insane, and it definately set the tone for the rest of the fall and the early season. And at this point in time when it comes to online content flow the homies and I are still going to be watching e v e r y t h i n g that will get us stoked, but when it comes down to it with the premieres coming up I couldn't be more excited. Might I say First Chair is going to be crazy good too? Hype. Absolute hype.

Theaters are generally shit. The bar needs to be accessible. The places that come with a bar generally don't provide enough bartenders to man it, and charge something fucking retarded like $6 for a tall boy.

Good Ski movie premiers: Triple Threat 2005-2008 (when it was at 122 evo). The Level1/ToySoldiers ON3P one in Portland we all got kicked out off

Bad Ski movie premiers: All of them held at the fucking Neptune and/or King Cat.

I like premiers where everyone is stoked and yelling loudly at the bangers. Beer helps with this, as does a big venue where people are free to move around.

It's super awkward when I'm the only one yelling "HOLY CRAP!!!!" and jumping around.

But I sure like premiers a lot more than just watching online. I'd go to the premier of many movies I would never buy just to get the chance to hang and watch the movie with a lot of other like minded folks. I'll be at the TGR movie at the Village, and will try to track down a Level 1 premier too, basically anything that's within a few hours of where I live.

When I was in college and even a few years after I would try to go to a few a year. I lived in an area where lots of them came through.

Older I get, less I care. I haven't skied park in maybe 5 years. I don't like the new style park skiing, I miss the good old days. I haven't bought a ski movie in maybe 4 or 5 years as well.

all true. i really miss the halloween constume party/triple threat combo. old evo premiers were so good. i remember when all the on3p guys each brought a ski to the premier to promote the brand. and the mormons. the mormons were great .

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD NS BRING BACK IF3 MONTREAL. Always the best times, seeing old friends from all sides of the globe, sweet films and getting way too drunk and of course eating poutine with all your favourite pros at 4 am. Also even though I don't see the need for the poster signings as I think I've grown out of that, protein is 5 beers slide perfectly into a poster tube, best kept secret for getting beer into IF3.

I completely agree.

only premieres I go to are at bars, in ski towns. You can barely even see the movie or hear the music most of the time but the stoke is so high, everyones shitfaced and most of the homies are back in town. luh dat shit!
