Recently saw some lycra-wearing cyclists using the word shred, and describing themselves "shredders". And as much as I don't want to be that guy, and I am an avid cyclist myself, I can't help but feel a little irked by their use of that word. What are they shredding? (Skiers and Snowboarders are of course shredding the gnar) Can mountain bikers shred the gnar as well? Road cyclists?
This got me thinking about where the use of that word in context of skiing and/or snowboarding got started. Growing up skiing in the terrain park I would hear snowboarders refer to themselves shredders and refer to skiers as skiers, but I never felt as if when skiers would use the word shred, the snowboarders would feel in anyway offended. So I guess what I'm getting at is it seemed to come from snowboarding, although this could just be my own experience.
Did snowboarding & skiing get the word "shred" (used in a similar way) from another sport possibly? Any thoughts on other sports using "shred"?
