No but FIS put a fuck load of rules and regulations on freestyle skiing and was a huge bureacracy (I think thats how you spell it)which controlled not only who was on olympic teams but what freestyle skiers could wear, and get paid, they screwed it into the ground and jumped on the next big mney grab snowboarding, this left abuncha pissed off skiers in the wake almost leading skiing the way of the dodo, thankfully people like mikey doug, shane szocs, seth morrison etc. have helped skiing evolve and I for one am not looking forward to see our new wave of skiing being fucked over like freestlye.

I never heard much about the freeskiing events that FIS has held in the past couple years...i guess most pros and magazines boycotted the events. Aside from the boycott...were they run well?

when the world cup at sunday river two years ago, they had a night halfpipe comp thingy, i'm not sure if it was fis, but it was sick, i didn't do it, but people were goin off, junpei won, and we ws goin like 12 feet out doing flares

Its obvious you people have no idea what I said in my last post, so...

If some one like Danny Kass of Grenade Gloves can medal in an olympic snowboarding halfpipe event, then FIS has not forever ruined the sport of snowboarding. If you don't know who Kass is, do your homework.

Snowboarding has not gone to total shit beacuse it is an olympic sport dictated by the FIS. Infact quite the contrary has happened. It has only been helped by it. Snowboarding is thriving more than ever.

Lets look at somthing else. Moguls are gay. the art of skiing moguls alone is a limiting thing. Point your skis downhill in a little rut and hit two small jumps. Who the hell really wants to do that? Not me.

Now halfpipe is somthing else. ONE, its new. TWO: its more exciting to watch for the avarage kid from Kansas sitting on his couch. He can better relate to it. THREE and most importantly, the people that are the best in the world at it are young kids that aren't going to let stupid rules govern what they are doing.

Moguls are fucked because they are stuck in a self defeating rut. The people making the desision are as old as the sport. Young kids that know better burn out and switch to freeride, so that leaves the types that either A: don't care if they are forever stuck doing daffy twister spreads, and or B: are to pasive to try and change things.

Our situation will never end up like moguls is today. Since the begining of it all, the athletes have been calling the shots. If FIS wants halfpipe in the olympics they will get it, but only if its on our terms, or terms that we deem acceptable. Any other way and the althletes wouldn't put up with it.

So in conclusion. YES skiing halfpipe in olympics, good thing... even if it is FIS.

THe thing about the olympics is that there are only 4 people allowed to represent the country, and the governing skiing body of the country, would probely choose who got to go, and who doesn't.

Leaving such an important thing in the hands of the csfa, or USSA would be stupid.

Wrong. FIS has proven time and again that it is capable of butt fucking a sport and wrestling the direction of the sport away from the creators of it and into their own greedy tentacles.

If you ski you should understand how skiing has been royally fucked over by FIS for the last few decades. They have stiffled progression and have bamboozled dollars from atheletes. They are a Gestapo organization which dictates the way skiers look right down to the way they ski.

They do not allow for personal interpretation of style but rather for achievement of their so called desired form. They are governed by rules and numbers rather then beauty and grace. They are in fact the rod that has been forcefully rammed up skiing's ass.

Snowboarding was once a sport of pioneers expressing their freedom on the snow. At first they were shunned and taunted by organizations such as FIS. They said fuck FIS and started they own governing body. The International Snowboarding Federation (ISF) which was composed of atheletes whom had climbed the ranks of the sport through personal accomplishment and by putting their money where their mouth was.

FIS was all good and well with this when the sport suddenly exploded. The snowboarder population expanded and the skier population stagnated. FIS is a commercial operation like any other and buisnesses follow the money. They dug their dirty conniving paws into snowboarding and slowly begun to pervert the sport.

FIS started to throw their own snowboarding events in direct competition with ISF events. At the start it wasn't so bad and boarders stuck with their motherly organization. However, snowboarders are human buisnesses too.

FIS has a decades long track record whereas the ISF was a mere baby in the world of sports. FIS started to pick up more corporate dollars and those dollars inevitably lured snowboarders. Even at this point there was still a strong FIS-ISF rivalry. Then came the KO punch.

The 1998 Nagano Olympics signified the death of the ISF. When snowbaording became part of the Olympics, they needed a governing body to decide upon who qualifies as well as who governs the sport. The FIS already had a cozy and comfortable relationship with the International Olympic Commitee and it came to the suprise (though disappointement and anger) of nobody that FIS was given jurisdiction over snowboarding.

Boom.

Atheletes interested in qualifying for the Olympics compete on the FIS tour in order to qualify. FIS tour attracts more profile atheletes as well as more corporate dollars. Yet more atheletes come... the spiral is obvious. The ISF's success was it's own demise.

ISF has pretty much been bankrupted and if now defunct. Beyond pure corporate events such as the X-Games and etc, snowboarding is ruled by FIS with an iron fist rivaling Stalin's. Once again, a pure sport has been turned black.

Yet rebellion still lurked. Terje the great himself boycotted the Olmypics as his personal sign of protest over the whole FIS coup d'etat. At the '98 Olympics, atheletes were seen wearing signs saying 'Terje was right.' But by the 2002 Olympics, Terje's example had all but been forgotten and snowboarding's worst fears had coalesced into reality and it looked doomed to go the way of the ski.

But snowboarding had learnt from skiing and it trying to regain control from FIS. They do it in their own subtle form. By controlling the public whom in turn control FIS. If FIS ever does something really dumb, they'll be told scaldingly and they will quickly relinquish their previous blunders. FIS is a learning beast too. They have learnt their lesson from snowboarding and hope to apply it to the so called freeskiing revolution.

Will the International FreeSkiers Assocation meet the same grizzly doom as the ISF? Will skiing control it's own fate or will it be thrown into the abyss of no inverts and bureacratic bullshit which plagues freestyle? Who is to tell? Not I, but I have words of advice.

Fuck FIS.

They both make awesome points and you'll probably learn something. I think it's awesome that skiing halfpipe is being considered for the next olympics, but the select few who qualify better start practicing. They've got a lot to live up to if they are allowed to compete and have to show the world that not just snowboarders can ride the pipe.

Just flip through any snowboarding mag right now or watch a video. The progression of that sport is so far ahead of skiing, it's ridiculous. Pros don't move a fucking muscle in the air and especially not in the halfpipe when they throw big floatly spins and grabs.

I'm all for skiing halfpipe in the olympics but I hope the event isn't sanctioned doesn't jump in prematurely.

EXCELENT POINTS hucksplat, but you failed to see mine (I think).

My point is: Snowboarding is not heading to hell in a hand basket as a result of its dealings with FIS in olympic competition. I understand everything about how FIS is bad and yada yada yah... BUT let me say it one more time. Olympic Halfpipe Snowboarding is not being turned into a carbon copy of World Cup Moguls by the FIS, AND snowboarding continues to thrive outside of FIS control through avenues such as video, usasa, etc.


So what makes you think skiing would be any different?

dave and huckslat made some good points but i think im gonna have to go with dave on this one. the snowboarding halfpipe went off with out a hitch this year. like dave said, kass got 2nd place. that has to tell u something.

And if FIS had gotten what they wanted for that comp, maybe the snowboarders would have been throwing ballerina style 540s instead of switch corked 1080s. the snowboarding industry had to have some type of influence on the FIS for that one.

and though we may think it, the FIS isn't all powerful. they can't force our skiers to do daffies. we have some type power. if they wanted the competing pros to throw down twister twister spreads then fuck it. we could say no to them. but since they want money, theyd want us to compete. they only way they could get that is if we had our way.

good point rocky. i think if all the mogul skiers decided to give the fis the finger and start throwing down in the bumps, the fis wouldnt be able to do a damn thing about it, but that probably won't happen for moguls. on the other hand, it would happen for halfpipe. No matter what the fis says, the skiers are gonna throw down the tricks that they wanna throw down, and if they decide to start drug testing, they wont have an olympic team.

I also don't know if some of you people realize who was at the last olympics for snowboarding for the US. They weren't on the US team. They actually did some last moment qualifier and beat out the people that the team had been training. I think if it is that way for skiing we can all just do our own thing and then when the olympics come around all go over to park city and try out for the team.

Also some of you probably don't realize that FIS is starting to change. They did let jonny do the flat spin, I mean dinner roll, at the last olympics. They do see what is happening (would be pretty hard not to) and are realizing that this is where the sport is truely heading. I would sit back and see where it really goes

(also another perk to FIS halfpipe is that more hills will be making GOOD half pipes. As all FIS scantioned events need terrain build to certain specs)

FIS definitely is making some changes. In moguls, all off-axis spins are allowed for this coming season. Also, no one is allowed to do any triple or quad twisters -- only doubles are the most one can do. Next year, it is anticipated that straight front and back flips will be allowed. Expect terrain changes, too, especially in duals (table top at bottom of mogul run, and maybe even a quarterpipe). FIS is listening to the kids and making the necessary changes -- what more do you want?

Furthermore, skiing pipe in the Olympics will not only elevate new school freestyle to a new level of popularity, recognition and respect, but it will also give all of the athletes who are at the top level of the sport the opportunity to COMPETE against each other and determine an Olympic Gold Medallist. No matter how many times people whine about going 'freeskiing' and riding 'for the love of the sport', there will always be people who want to take that a step further in the form of organized competition and find out who truly is the best -- it's just fundamental human nature.

With respect to drug testing, don't all medal winners get tested for drugs? Hmmm but I suppose if our heroes made the team those that indulge in the practice of burning could abstain for a month.

Halfpipe was cool in the olympics, but the only thing that was strange but understandable, was seeing it scored on a trichomatic scale... style, amplitude, and overall impression (I think those were it). But I couldn't see too much controversy coming from that.

Don't even make me start on why freeze made those FIS sucks shirts. Its obvious they do suck, but.... I don't want to get into it.

Szocs or Douglas or someone wrote and article for freeze this past season on why FIS sucks. I can't remember the month, but it's there. It had me convinced, but looking at the snowboard halfpipe, i'm not overly concerned.

this is one of the more intelligent posts on this board... anyways as for freestyle skiing the FIS has fucked it up beyond repair, any changes that are allowing freedom were made too late, kids just stopped caring about it, I understand what your saying about snowboarding, the sport itself has not been effected, neither has its categories... yet... when freestyle started it was the new best thing too, but as it moved on guess what happened, the beareuacrats (I think thats how you spell it) at the FIS made deals with comapanies etc. which screwed it over.. maybe some time in the not so near future halpipe snowboarding inparticular may reach its prime and die out like freestyle skiing, thats when it will effect snowboarding.

*Neil, totaly not true. You do have an indirect say in it. If you keep skiing how you want to keep skiing, and you don't bend to some elses rules or other BS, then skiing will continue to thrive regardless of whatever ANY orginization trys to lay on skiing.

This means that FIS could improve from it's mistakes and quite possibly become a reasonable yard stick for skiing and snowboarding. It's not that they are totally evil, I'd just rather see control rest where it belongs.

If FIS were to form an independent subcommitee formed by people with properly screwed on heads, I'd be down. However, I'd also like to see them in charge of financial distribution for the discipline which they oversee.

Someone mentioned terrain and trick progression in freestyle and attempt to resurge what many have called a dying sport. I quit freestyle years ago and have since been out of the loop. Welcome news if you ask me. Long overdue but better late then never.

Quite frankly FIS isn't all bad and if it's learnt from the past, it could actually bring alot of growth and development to the sport. But you don't tango with a stranger who's already raped you. I personally don't trust FIS (nor most other 'political' organizations).

They did do a good job on the snowboarding task, but I feel that they more took credit for somebody else's sweat and blood.

In all honesty, freeskiing will be in the olympics. It's inevitable. It's a matter of whom controls it. FIS can and has proven with mediocre success that it can run the show. They're like a slow steam engined locomotive. Hard to start, but once it motion keeps on going. But like the locomotive engine it is hard to stop once on the wrong track. Look what it did to freestyle.

Maybe FIS has learnt. Snowboarding has somewhat proven that they have. I honestly believe that FIS can do a good job of getting freeskiing in the Olympics. But I feel that it would always be a struggle to get things accomplished. I think it would be a case of FIS doing the right thing but for the wrong reasons.

FIS is made up of intelligent human beings and I'll be suprised if they fuck up hardcore twice. They will most likely bring freeskiing to the olympics and succeed at it too. But it the end it comes down to this. Who do you want skiing to be controlled by. Old geezers in suits or skiers like you and me?

Here's the thing regarding FIS forcing skiers to do certain tricks: No, of course they can't force any athlete to do any kind of trick. But yes, they can give the podium to the guys who do perform the trick of FIS's choice.

Moseley was saying in either Freeze or Freeskier (pick one, he was interviewed as the coverboy on both this year) something to the effect that 'there are tons of guys doing 360 tail grabs in competition-but not the guys who are winning.' The guys who are winning these events are still throwing quad twisters because they score higher.

Unless there is an unnanomous vote by all skiers in an event to NOT throw quad twisters or daffies and only throw new stuff, somebody is always going to spoil the rest of the field by disregarding the image of the sport and going for the easy win. Seriously, I'd much rather be Moseley and come in fourth with a flatspin/corked/dinnerrole 7 than be the dude that won a gold with a quad twister.

And yes, I just said quad twister three times in that post.

everyone listen to jibtech. he's right. did you see the tricks snowboarders were pulling in the halfpipe. it was sick. they were going inverted and doing all that shit. and danny kass won it.

moguls are messed becuase only 2 new school skiers did it this year from u.s. jonny and evan.

in moguls everyone skis down the same line hits the same jump...so why would their tricks be different. the reason moguls suck is because everyone does the same thing. no one will go out there and be innovative.

and also..i'd like to see how many people would go inverted...throwing a good trick into rock hard moguls...i tink of all the competitors about 2 would do it.

Sugarloafer- That's the problem. If all but 2 people threw newschool tricks and FIS kept their rules, than those 2 who followed them would place 1st and 2nd. Even if they don't look as stylie or whatever, it doesn't mean anything because the quads would score higher.

FIS has to first change rules that would make twisters obsolete and make spinning grabs score higher than they do now. But back to the subject, Freestyle is lacking in progression and I think it'll stay that way.

Halfpipe allows total freedom to athletes and even with FIS regulation I can't imagine them storming in to tell skiers not to huck flairs.
