Painted Ski's?

So over the summer I’ve been working on painting my skis. They are a pair of Volkl Unlimited AC50, I lightly sanded, cleaned and primed over the original graphics, then painted on my designs with acrylic paint. Finally I topped it off with many coats of automotive clear coat. (I used KBS Diamond Coat, it was supposedly hard, but not brittle). I am really happy with how they turned out! Ill have to see if it holds up this coming season.

That's sick! love how colorful they are, must have taken ages to get all the detail.

I painted my old blends and drew this graphic on them with a sharpie last year, it ended up chipping pretty badly though and I sold them to a friend. Hoping to paint the same design with the colors inverted on my new skis this fall, aside from the auto clear coat op used anyone else have some recommendations to prevent chipping?

I have thought about spray painting my top sheets all white or black, how well would that last?

I'm not an expert but, I think the paint will last longer if you spray paint them with the color a few times. Then build up layers of clear coat, that way if something chips, its clear and doesn't screw with the color.

Not sure if you've ever skied Volkls like that, but they're still as hell. I don't think OP has much to worry about in that aspect.

Haha yeah Volkl's are stiff, but on the average skiing in the Pacific Northwest these babies will cut through that cascade concrete like a hot knife through butter. Plus in my opinion they still give quality control through the trees and are wide enough to "surf" through the POW... Ive got some wide pow skis but on an average day, these puppies take care of me!

I have a 2 pairs of volkl walls that I painted solid black and gray. Contemplating painting my Head Caddys and armada B Dogs.

Could you post a pic because I have volkl ledges and I was considering doing black and grey. I just don't know what design to do. I have a grey and black saga fatigue jacket and black pants so it would be sick if the skis matched.

Question for you that have done this, I have a pair of Volkl Chopsticks. They are big skis. I've noticed top sheet chipping and noticed some fibers of the skis on the outer edges and around the tips where its a fibrous material visible. I just wanted to know what the process of skis like this should be.

Would I have to clamp with poxy and try to smooth out the rough parts? Rip off the entire top sheet and clear coat until smooth? Sand the edges and pray for the best (pray for harambe)? I'm just worried of screwing it up. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think ripping off the top sheet would be the way to go. I think that it would make the inner layers more vulnerable to rotting and clear coats will only last so long. I painted a pair of volkl gotamas and even with multiple layers of clear automotive protection spray they still mega chipped. The cores are getting rotten so I think I'm going to repaint them and then hang them on my wall so I'll toss a pic up when I'm done

See, that's what scares me about doing it with skis that are chipping like that. It makes me think that anything I'd do would in terms of painting would only be a patch job that would last minimally.

I think for chipping though, there is not really a high quality long term fix. I would sand down the edges a little and where the main chipping is just so it won't get caught on anything and spread any further. I would then probably paint on a few layers of like a waterproof varnish that you would use on like a boat. That's my best suggestion right there

Maybe you could try like a clear gel coat with fiberglass like they do on boats. It could work well but it also might change how the ski flexes.

I think the key of preventing chipping is finding a clear paint, or resin that is hard enough to where it wont just scratch off, but it needs to be flexible and soft enough so its not so brittle and just chips off. perhaps you could layer both types to try and get the best of both worlds,.... just a thought tho maybe all the paints chips off.

at the end of the day though for me at least if it chips, I don't really care.
(Ill just blame it on shredding too hard)
