How to handle little brother

Little background information: He's 16 and just got his license. His name is Kyle.


He's been acting completely out of line. He gets home a few weeks ago at 2 in the morning. My dad wakes up and goes to yell at him for being home so late. So my dad does that and Kyle just acts like a complete butch the entire time. He was rolling his eyes at him, saying "OK WHATEVER" in a typical teenage girl tone, and then started calling my dad an "ugly fat peice of shit" and other things. So my dad goes to grab him and Kyle goes fucking apeshit. He fucking punches my dad and pushes him into the miror behind him shattering it. My dad finally has enough and tries to kick him out of the house. But my mom is there at this point and she vetos his decision (They are in the middle of a divorce and pretty much hate each other. Resulting in a lack of empathy for my dad).

Kyle acts like this for the next couple of weeks. He and my dad get into a few scuffles every few days, but my mom refuses to intervene.

So one day after they're done arguing, I confront Kyle. I basically told him that he's being a disrespectful shithead and that he needs to stop. He then threatens to post some embarrassing shit about me on the Internet (lol I sound like a middle school girl) Then he goes apeshit on me and starts throwing punches. I retaliate, and get one in his gut, one on his jaw. Then he just gets more angry and gets a fucking baseball bat. At this point I was just trying to survive, but I was also fucking cause he hit me with the bat. I managed to wrestle him to the floor. Then I was simply seeing red. I just let loose. My mom came home right as this was happening and ripped me off.


My mom takes him to the hospital. He has a mild concussion, a broken nose, and an orbital fracture. Cops come by. They ask a few questions then leave.

So my brother comes home and tells me that he is going to get my mom to file a restraining order against me. (No idea if he can do this or not). He also said if I ever touch him again, he will press charges (I'm 18).

So NS, what should I do about Kyle

Call the cops the next time they fight. Domestic violence isn't just between partners. Family members can be charged as well.

Youre mom really need to get her head straight it sounds like. She is causing a lot of damage.

This is a family matter so you can't call it quits and let them do their thing. I would say that you need to help him through this "teenage" phase so he doesn't act like this for the rest of his life...

Tell him if he comes after you again, especially with a weapon, you'll press charges. Then follow through. Empty threats only feed this kind of behaviour.

He's only 16. Unless he's charged as an adult, shouldn't mess up his future too much.

Also, cut this crap out about you messing up his record. He's messing up his record. He chooses to go after someone with a weapon and he gets away with it, what is he learning? I get that childhood/youth is a time to make mistakes, but now is also the time to be learning life lessons. Better he find out what the consequences of beating someone with a baseball bat are now than when he's in his 20's and he has an adult record.

I had a somewhat similar problem with my older brother but our fights would end up much worse like broken teeth, noses, smaller fractures in the hand and knees, cracked ribs twice and a couple of nights in jail. I can tell you from personal experience that talking with him won't solve shit and talking to your mom probably won't either as she's obviously blinded by the love for her son in this situation. anyways, there isn't really an immediate solution to this. If he shows home and goes apeshit on your dad the only way i can see this working out is both of you overpowering him and just holding him down (don't hit him or hurt him in any way) while waiting for police to show up. It may not be the best solution for him but it is for you and your dad. police will say you're in the right as you feared for your life and were forced to take action. If i were you i'd try to just wait it out until the divorce is finalized and then move out with your dad. you're 18 so you won't run into custody problems and you and your dad will be able to go on living your life in peace.

I know this is probably not what you want to hear but it's just how it has to go down to make sure you're all safe. If he's grabbing baseball bats it's time to either get away from him or arrest him.

out of everything this covers the most bases and seems the most reasonable.


and if he (anyone) comes at you with a bat just grab the thing before he starts swinging it. Talking people out of trying to smack you with solid objects generally doesn't work that well.

Sounds like your brother is acting out because your parents are at each other's throats and he is taking advantage of the power vacuum and lack of unity in the family. If you can team up with your dad to get your mom on board to agree to some basic expectations of order despite tough times you might be able to make progress. But honestly, you are 18 just say fuck it and move out so you can live your life.

Update: Haven't talked to him since (Partially because I choose to, partially because of circumstance). Mom is trying to get him to apologize to all of us. Kyle has been refusing. Dad is moving out soon. Kyle and my dad haven't talked to each other at all either. My relationship with both parents is improving greatly. Kyle is even beginning to alienate my mom. He pretty much lives at his friends place.
